Chapter 6: Shadows and Secrets

755 Words
The night pressed in like a secret too heavy to carry. Every creak of the floorboards and whisper of wind through Blackthorn Manor felt like a warning. Valentina couldn’t sleep. Her blood still buzzed from the earlier confrontation, from the fire that had poured out of her hands and burned the Shadowborn into ash. She stood in one of the upper halls, overlooking the moonlit courtyard. Below, guards in black patrolled silently. This place wasn’t just a home—it was a fortress. “You’re pacing,” came Lucien’s voice from behind. Valentina turned sharply, unsurprised to find him there. “You always sneak up on people like that?” His mouth curved slightly. “Only the interesting ones.” She rolled her eyes, but her heart betrayed her with a thump she hoped he didn’t hear. “I should leave,” she muttered, more to herself than to him. “I can’t stay locked in your world.” “You’re not locked in,” Lucien replied, walking slowly toward her. “You’re awakening to it.” Valentina didn’t back away, but her voice was tight. “What do you even want from me, Lucien? I’m not your soldier. I’m not your heir. I’m not…” Her voice caught. “I’m not some prophecy.” Lucien studied her, his expression unreadable. “No. You’re more than all of that. But you don’t see it yet.” “Stop talking in riddles!” “You think your power came from nowhere? That your family was innocent? The Moreaus weren’t victims—they were protectors. And when they fell, everything began to unravel.” She stared at him, breath shallow. “You knew them. You knew my mother.” “I did.” His voice softened. “And I failed her.” Silence stretched between them. Then the great doors at the end of the corridor slammed open, breaking the moment. “Lord Black,” said a soldier, breathless. “Shadowborn. They’re inside the western wing.” Lucien’s eyes turned to steel. “Get her to the lower vaults. Seal them if I don’t return.” Valentina grabbed his arm. “No. I’m not hiding.” “You don’t understand what these things are—” “I’ve seen one. I destroyed one.” Lucien hesitated, then nodded. “Then stay behind me. Do not take off the ring. And whatever happens—don’t let the Shadowborn touch your mind.” They raced through the manor—past ancient portraits, enchanted sigils that flared under pressure, and statues that moved when no one watched. In the western wing, the air grew colder, thicker. Wrong. Then she saw it. The creature stood twice as tall as a man, cloaked in black mist, its face a void. This one didn’t shriek. It didn’t move. It simply watched. And then it spoke, not out loud, but inside her head. “Flame-blood… He cannot protect you.” Valentina gasped, staggered. Her mind filled with whispers—visions of fire, of her mother’s scream, of Lucien kneeling in blood. Lucien stepped forward, his blade drawn. “You’ve no right to her.” The Shadowborn laughed—a sound like cracking bones. “She belongs to us.” And it lunged. Lucien moved faster than lightning, clashing steel against magic. The manor itself groaned under the force of their battle. Valentina felt the ring on her finger heat up again. Her body responded before her mind could catch up. She reached out— A wave of fire burst from her. Not just flame—but light. The Shadowborn reeled, shrieking. It tried to vanish into mist—but her fire clung to it like a curse. Lucien struck. One clean slice—and the creature dissolved into ash and silence. Valentina collapsed to her knees, heart hammering. Lucien knelt beside her, grabbing her shoulders. “You’re not hurt?” “No,” she whispered. “But I saw something. I heard them.” He nodded grimly. “They’ll keep coming now. They’ve felt your power.” She looked at him, voice shaking. “Then teach me how to use it.” Lucien’s expression shifted—respect and something deeper flickering in his eyes. “Tomorrow,” he said. “We begin.” And as the first light of dawn crept through the windows, Valentina knew the war had begun—not just for the world, but for herself. She was no longer just a girl with a grudge. She was a flame rebound.
