He was coming closer to her. The distance between their bodies slowly disappeared. If Anne so much as moved, she would fall into Miles’s arms. His warm breath brushed against her face, sending a pleasant shiver through her. She couldn’t bring herself to move. If Miles was influencing her, she wanted to stay under his spell. If he was dominating her, she wanted to surrender completely.
“What if I ask you to bring yourself under my command, will you?” He whispered in her ears. A shiver went down her spine, and she forgot to take a breath. Her ear turned red due to the heightening emotions. She wanted to touch the lobe of her ear to give it a rest, but she could not. Miles grabbed her hand in the mid-way and kissed it. She was not expecting this treatment from Miles. All she expected was a scold from Miles, but Miles was not that heartless. She did not want to break the expectations of a girl who came to his room in the middle of the night to ‘deliver’ something. She was silently trembling, and her shivering was saying it all. She repented of the time when she decided to come to the Miles' room. She became helpless in front of her emotions and decided to visit Miles in his room but now she was worried of the impression it would make on his mind. Miles kissed her earlobe this time. His body was pressing against hers and she embraced him. They were soon leaning into each other and became one body. The touch, the whisper, the breaths on her face, all were singing a love note.
She wanted time to stop here but she heard someone approaching the room. She suddenly became alert of the feet approaching the room. She wanted to free herself from Miles’ clasp, but she could not. She resisted him but he was strong as the pull of the fate and was as tall as the shadows on the wall. He soon became aware of the movement of Anne beneath him, and he tried to hush her, “Stop resisting this budding love between you and I” and her defiance stopped. She forgot the approaching feet and surrendered to the love nurturing between the arms. “Let me go, please! What if someone sees...” and he did not let her complete her sentence. He locked her lips with his finger and asked her to remain silent. She followed. They both were able to listen to each other’s heartbeat. Anne’s heart pounded with a wild, desperate rhythm. She buried her mouth into Miles' chest and Miles held her even more tightly. He had no intention of letting her go.
That was the only night when Anne was close to him physically. At that night, when Miles was not letting her go, she pleaded him. The more she requested, the more Miles drew himself on her. He was coming very strong. He touched her face, her arms, her ears and Anne was losing herself completely. Until one weak moment when he held her a little loose in his arms, she broke away his grasp and ran away. After that she never saw Miles. It had been 3 years since he was gone on the mission. He was fighting some mercenaries in the Middle East, and it was a dangerous mission. She prayed for his safety and success of the mission. He remained in touch with her father but stopped talking to her. She mourned over his ghosting, but she could not tell this to anyone in her family. If she ever talked to her mother, she would have denied the possibility of love between Anne and Miles. For her mother, Miles was a grand officer who would never afford an affair with a simple and naive girl like Anne. Anne could only talk to Rami about it and Rami suggested her to wait for him.
One winter morning, her phone rang. The number that appeared on the screen was unknown. She did not pick up. The phone rang again. This time, out of curiosity, she picked it up. The voice on the phone made her head spin. It was a call from a military hospital saying that Miles got injured in combat and he was asking to see her.
The news of his injury dawned upon her as a shock. She imagined him wrapped in bandages_ barely breathing. she imagined him to keep calling her name, "Anne,, Anne". Suddenly she realized that instead of imagining his condition she should rush to the hospital. when she arrived at the hospital, she asked for the room Miles was admitted in.The whole family of Miles was there. His proud, ill-mannered ,aloof-from-the-world mother was also standing there who frowned at her the moment she came into sight. She did not care about the gestures of his mother and went straight to the Miles. Miles was not injured that much. he had some bruises over his face, arms and ankles. He was beaten up severely by a mob and got internal injuries. It was all visible on his face how much pain he was enduring at that time. Tears ran down from her supple, pinkish cheeks and she asked in a choked, trembling voice, "How could this happen to you?" and Miles turned his face towards the wall on his left. She thought he faced the wall because he could not see her in tears but it was bigger than that.
It was such a time when all of these people; the family of Miles forced him to leave Anne and marry someone else. She did not know that he was under pressure but when news of his wedding was broken by Miles' father, she could not believe it. He said, "We have called you to tell you that Miles is going to marry James' daughter". She could not move in shock. Her eyes filled with tears and she stood there helpless with Miles still facing the wall.
