The Contract

1090 Words
“I’ll stay.” The words slipped out before I could stop them. But once they were spoken, there was no turning back. “The late Mr. Charlie Adams gave me a chance when no one else would. I was nothing. An orphan with no real qualifications. Yet he trusted me. Working at WhiteWing is the only way I can honour him.” My voice was steady, though a single tear betrayed me. The attorney nodded. Adrian, stone-faced, said nothing. “Well, Mr. Adrian, it seems you now have a personal assistant,” the attorney announced. Adrian turned to me, a slow, deliberate smile curving his lips. His gaze lingered, heavy and invasive. “I look forward to working with you, Flora Anderson.” His hand engulfed mine. The grip was strong, warm, too warm. The handshake stretched on, his eyes locked on mine until my breath faltered. My pulse betrayed me, hammering beneath my skin like it wanted to escape. The attorney excused himself, leaving me alone with Adrian in the cavernous room. The silence pressed in, heavy and suffocating, the kind that made even breathing sound like trespass. He gestured. A bodyguard stepped forward, placing a suitcase on the table. Adrian opened it and slid a thick contract across to me. “I drafted terms under which we’ll work,” he said, circling me like a predator measuring its prey. “Read.” The pages smelled of fresh ink, sharp and cold. I skimmed the lines, each word tightening a coil in my stomach. One line made my blood run cold: close proximity at all times… every need to be met. “What exactly does this mean?” My voice wavered, though I forced steel into it. He crouched beside me, lips brushing the shell of my ear. His breath was hot, deliberate. “What do you think it means?” A shiver betrayed me, cascading down my spine. “You need to be clear,” I whispered, though the tremor in my voice gave me away. His grin deepened, dangerous and knowing. “My father left you a property beside mine. That satisfies the proximity clause. As for my needs...” his eyes darkened, molten with unspoken things. “I have professional ones. And… personal ones. Desires. Whenever I want. However I want.” I jolted to my feet, chair scraping loudly against marble. “Absolutely not! I’ll work for you, but I won’t be your toy.” His hand shot out, seizing my chin with unnerving precision. He tilted my face up, forcing me into his burning gaze. “You will. Don’t you want to honour my father’s wish? Stay by my side as I take his empire? You’ll give in.” Every word dripped with certainty, as though he already owned my defiance, already tasted the surrender I hadn’t given. He released me suddenly, the absence of his grip burning worse than the hold itself. Cold. Calculated. “Sign it. Tomorrow. Noon.” Then he strode out, leaving me shaking in the vastness of the room. Later, Jimmy exploded. “He what?” His chopsticks clattered to the floor, forgotten. His eyes blazed with outrage, fists curling like he wanted to punch through walls. “Calm down,” I murmured, though my own chest still trembled from Adrian’s words. “Calm down? His father’s barely in the ground and he’s already cornering you!” Jimmy’s voice cracked with disbelief, each word a whip of anger and fear. I tried to explain, though nothing I said could soften the reality. “This isn’t about love. He doesn’t want me, he wants control.” “Then leave!” Jimmy slammed his palm against the table, rattling the dishes. His eyes, usually playful and warm, were clouded with fury. “He’s twisting your loyalty into chains.” I wanted to argue, to insist I could handle it, but the truth was harder. Against all reason, Adrian’s voice, his eyes, the unshakable certainty in his tone, still haunted me. He was dangerous, yes. But there was something about that danger that called to a part of me I didn’t want to admit existed. When Jimmy pulled me into his arms, his voice broke. “Don’t let him change you, Flora. Please. Don’t let him take who you are.” For a fleeting second, I let myself rest there, safe in his embrace. But safety was temporary. Safety didn’t survive men like Adrian Adams. I pulled away, forcing a smile that didn’t reach my eyes. “I’m in control.” I wasn’t. The next morning, I stared at my reflection for too long. The woman staring back at me didn’t look like someone who belonged in Adrian Adams’s world. Why me? I wasn’t extraordinary. Just a woman with long hair, a plain face, a modest frame. Nothing about me screamed power or allure. And yet… he’d chosen me. Or maybe marked me was a better word. By 11:30, I stood outside WhiteWing. The building felt different, colder, as though it already wore Adrian’s shadow. Inside, everything gleamed too perfectly, like a stage waiting for its new master. His office bore his mark already, sleek, powerful, sharp-edged. The air itself seemed to hum with his presence. His bodyguards, statues in black, ushered me in. He stood at the window, a dark silhouette against the city skyline. He didn’t turn, but his voice carried, deep and commanding. “Sit.” A new contract slid across the desk. Clean. Professional. Stripped of the sinister clauses from yesterday. “What game is this?” I asked, narrowing my eyes. “Read. Sign.” His tone was ice, clipped, almost bored. “Five seconds.” “Wait!” “Four.” “Adrian!” “Three. Two.” Panic flared, crawling up my throat. I grabbed the pen and signed, the ink scratching across the paper like a verdict. His smirk said it all. A man who knew he’d won before the game had even begun. “Good,” he murmured, leaning forward, close enough that I felt the heat of him. “Now prove you’re worth my time.” His lips brushed dangerously near my ear, his words sinking like a brand. “And for every mistake…” He paused, savoring it. “…you’ll be punished.” My heart stuttered, panic warring with something else, something I didn’t want to name. “And what does that mean?” I whispered. He smirked, eyes gleaming with challenge. “Why don’t I give you a preview?”
