[ THE PAST - 12000 YEARS AGO ]
BOOK'S CHAPTER TWO: WHO ARE YOU?
SELENE'S POV
As I stepped out of the lively atmosphere of the party, the cool night air embraced me. The faint noise of laughter and music receded into the distance, leaving an idyllic serenity behind. The streets were barely illuminated, giving deep shadows, as I made my way back to my apartment. Each step brought a sense of content exhaustion, and the rhythmic tapping of my footsteps accompanied me on the journey home.
But then, I momentarily paused when I saw Hannah throwing her guts off the street. She then immediately stood up from her hiccup and wiped off her mouth using her bare hands. "She's really wasted with those heavy drinks and beers."
I was about to walk past them when I heard her whining like a child. I, then, turned my gaze on them only to witness Hannah, crying like a child. And as I was about to call out her name, she spoke loudly.
"She always gets everything that I want! HA HA. All the attention was always on her. I mean, WHAT ABOUT ME?" Face drawn with sorrow; she wiped off her tears using her bare palms. She glanced up to the dark sky, holding back her tears from flowing.
My gaze then darted to her face, and that's when I noticed that there were small cuts and dried blood on her cheeks. I am completely flustered and puzzled with her words, but above all, I'm more worried about her bruises. I wonder, who could that be she's pertaining to?
She sighed, a heavy one, breaking the silence between them. She grappled another bottle beside her and I'm a bit surprised that Alyssa didn't even budge and stop her. I shook my head and decided to walk past them. I didn't want to interrupt, I'd just let them, for now.
I crossed my arms over my chest when the gust cold of wind brushed through my skin. The moment I closed my eyes, the happenings that had occurred earlier flashed back through my mind. "Thieve Warriors, huh?" I mumble as I gaze up to the sky.
"He's a thief then?" I whispered through the air.
I instantly shook that thought off my head. "Yeah, obviously." I heaved a sigh.
Morning comes. I opened my eyes to a scuffed-up room where I am currently staying for duties purposes. I groaned as I stretched my arms upwards. "That was a good sleep." I murmur.
I, then, ran my fingers through my hair, stood up and walked towards the window. I widely opened the curtains, waking the sun to its slumber with a smile on my face. "Good morning!" I greeted the sky.
I squinted my eyes from the soaring light. I, then looked away and gazed over to my kitchen place. I walked towards there and opened up my fridge's door, scanning. "What could I cook for breakfast?" I ask myself. After a couple of minutes of battling against myself, I ended up frying an egg.
Time flies so fast here, I didn't even notice that i was staring into the unknown for an hour with an empty plate in front of me. I immediately seized my towel and took a bath.
Throughout the time, my phone suddenly started ringing like crazy. Only to find out that it was Archie calling, informing me that Alyssa and Hannah had invited me over to the sunflower field.
Good thing it was scheduled this afternoon because I have a lot of errands to run this morning. And now, I'm currently standing in front of a lengthy mirror staring at my own reflection. I turned around to scan the outfit I chose. I turned back to my bed's direction and couldn't help but frown on the sight. Different types of clothes were scattered over my bed as of this moment, people.
"Gosh, why do I always end up cleaning the mess I made, instead of going out early."
As soon as I finished folding my clothes, I hurriedly dragged my ass off my apartment.
"Good noon, Selene!" Mr. Terrence exclaimed— my neighbor. He raised his hand in greeting, but I threw him my usual look as I gave him a dismissive wave. Despite what I've acted towards him, he still manages to smile. I walked past his room, and I continued tramping along the way.
That was Terrence, a friend— I guess? I mean, not a typical one 'cause I've always known he had secret feelings for me. Although it's not a secret anymore.
I took a deep breath as I stepped out of the building. As I was tramping under the blue sky, my eyes caught Dennis across the street. I immediately called out for his name, and he gazed at me, waving his hand with a smile on his face.
"Hello, good morning!" I greeted.
"Where are you going?" He shouted in distance.
I chuckled as I shouted back, "To the library!"
His face furrowed in confusion as he gave me a 'What do you mean' look. He traipsed his eyes into my head down to my toes.
"That's new. Good luck!" He shouted back.
I smiled at him and gave him a thumbs up. I quickly took my pace because it has gotten hotter, and the heat is already piercing through my skin.
I went straight to the shelves as I was filling my head with random thoughts about those "Thieve warriors" I shook off my head, trying to concentrate.
Shoot, how am I supposed to find that specific book that tackles all about Amaranthine in this huge place? It's going to be forever for me because I don't know how to use a card catalog. I came to this age not knowing how to use a card catalog, and I'm too embarrassed to ask for help.
"Are you trying to learn how to steal?" My soul left my body as I heard someone spoke. I turned my back to see who it was.
"What the hell, Archie?!" I quietly hissed.
He didn't even budge, and was just staring at me, waiting for me to enlighten him. "Of course not! I-I'm just trying to, you know." He scanned the book I'm currently holding and glared at me.
"Start talking." He commanded.
I heaved a sigh in defeat. I began narrating the situation that had occurred last night, and about that guy that quipped my interest.
"Pft!" He exclaimed, trying to hold back his laughter.
I shot her a stern look, "What's so funny?"
"So, you were interested?" He teasingly said.
My left brow rose in confusion, "To who?"
"To that guy!" He retorted as he was still trying to hold back his laugh. "I mean, the fact that he was called a thief, that makes him bad. Isn't it?"
I went silent after that. I don't know what to say. My head's telling me that he is, but there's this unfamiliar sensation or so they called feeling that's telling me otherwise.
Moments passed, we decided to go meet with Alyssa and Hannah for our plans. And as we were walking through the street, I noticed that large pillows of clouds are gradually engulfing the blue sky. We instantly ran when we felt the droplets of water drenched our skin.
In the distance, we spotted Alyssa and Hannah standing under a porch all wet. We abruptly ran in their direction to join them.
"Argh, sucks!" Hannah groaned in frustration. "My dress— it's all ruined!" She exclaimed irritably.
"This was supposed to be a great day. And now it's all ruined. What a day." Alyssa added.
I turned my gaze on them. "Hush, there's still tomorrow."
They faintly smiled and looked away.
Hannah then gently wrapped his arms around her upper body, as beads of rain continued spattering the whole field. Bolts started lighting through the misty clouds and gloomy sky. Moments had passed and the rain began slowing down.
"I think it's okay to come out now." I asserted.
Their faces instantly lit up with joy as they stepped out from the porch. "I guess we'll have to part ways here. Let's perhaps try it again tomorrow." Alyssa exclaimed.
We all agreed and part ways.
Even though it stopped raining, the cold wind is still brushing through my skin making me shiver. Over minutes of walking, I accidentally bumped into Diana, my colleague.
"Oh hi, where are you up to?" She asked.
"I'm going home, I got soaked in the rain so I must change my clothes otherwise I'll catch a cold. But may I ask where you are going with those." I eyed the thing she was holding.
"Oh, it's a gift. From the chief to the Perennial leader. I'm heading now to the border to hand this one." She spoke.
"Actually, Senior was looking for you for an hour now, because you were supposedly going to be handing this one to the other side. But no worries."
Oh, shoot! I forgot.
"I'm really sorry for the trouble, I completely forgot." I quickly bow in embarrassment, but she just chuckled.
"It's fine, really." She paused. "But if you'd like to come, you're also welcome to do that."
My face immediately lit up with excitement as I nodded twice as If I'm a kid getting excited.
She chuckled and led the way. This is my only chance to see him, if ever he's going to be there.
"We're here!" She exclaimed.
We instantly stopped the moment we reached the border line. "Any minute now, they'll arrive." She was pertaining to those Amaranthine who would receive the gift.
"Oh, shoot. I forgot" I slope my head, speculating what she was blabbering about.
"What do you mean?" Confusion drew over my face as I was watching her.
"I was supposed to be at the Elders' Council Chamber at this moment. I'm sorry! But I really have to leave. Can you handle this on your own?" She hurriedly asked.
I nodded in response, and she quickly handed me the gifts, and ran as fast as she could. Well, that was quite a disaster, ain't it? I shrugged my shoulders as I waited more.
Moments had passed, someone showed up. But I was unable to recognize the receiver because he was shrouded with mist. "Pleasantries, Senior. I am here to deliver this gift of—"
I almost dropped the gifts, horror filled through me as I was trying to figure out who I am currently facing. I couldn't see its face. So, I took a pace forward.
I froze my place when I saw those glistening eyes again, staring at me with astonishment in its eyes. "W-Who are you?" He didn't respond.
Instead, he slowly took off his mask, revealing his face.
"I have never—"
Stuttering.
Pounding.
"I have never seen someone with eyes like yours." I mumbled.
"And I've never seen someone with such divine face like yours."
It seems like the world stopped spinning for us.
"I am Denovian."
