Mr Doyle’s Trepidation

1066 Words
The phone beeps woke Noah up. He sits upright and picks up his phone from the bedside cabinet. He checked the caller and he sees it was Lucas. “You found him?” Noah said as soon as he picks the call. “Yes, we are at police precinct” Lucas said and Noah’s brows bowed in a frown. “I never instructed you to do that, I told you to bring him to me” Noah said, forgetting that he had told Lucas to get the man locked up as soon as he finds him. Lucas wasn’t surprised to hear Noah say that. Noah was the type of person whose decisions on something changed in split seconds. “You told me to get him locked up just two days ago” Lucas said, trying to defend himself. “Well you in particular should have known I might have changed my mind” Noah said and Lucas apologized to him. He ended the call instantly and dumps his phone on the bed. He stands up and got off the black shorts he had on so he could get ready for work. When he got under the shower, he turns it on and the water begins to rain down his body. He runs his hands through his hair and a memory flashed through his mind. It was of his wife. He recalls how innocently she had tried to make a conversation with him the night before. “I’m sorry to be a bother to you” Valeria had said but Noah didn’t give her a response. “Isn’t it awfully quiet at night, I think we should have Ava staying in, at least this wouldn’t repeat itself again” Valeria had said again when she heard Noah say nothing. After much silence, Noah decides to speak. “I’m not complaining” he had simply replied and from then on, Valeria kept quiet till they were done having their meal. “I could walk on my own, I just need to hold on to your arm” Valeria had quickly said when they were done eating. Noah acted like he didn’t hear her, he lifted her up in his arms in a swift and carried her to her room while Daisy barked behind them. He laid her lightly on the bed and pull up the covers on her. Just as he wanted to go, Valeria caught his hand. He looks back at her, seeing she was staring into space as usual. Valeria held his hand still but hesitated to talk. “Talk” Noah said and Valeria summoned the courage to say whatever got her uneasy. “I have to use the loo” Valeria said very quietly that Noah barely heard her but he did. He had at once considered having Ava working as a stay-in maid for Valeria. He stood still for a while before getting her back in his arms and carrying her over to bathroom. Valeria’s cheeks had reddened in embarrassment and she regretted asking him, she had thought she could have just tried to find her way after he was gone but it was too late. Noah had seated her on the loo and after she was done peeing, Noah passed her the toiletries. She couldn’t mutter any more word as the confidence had drained out of her after the most embarrassing moment of her life just took place. Back at her previous home, she could have found her way easily to the loo or if it had been Noah’s room which she was already adapting to, she wouldn’t have ever asked him. Noah found it so surprising to him how he hadn’t been pissed by her. After he laid her back on the bed and draw up the covers on her, he immediately left to his room. At that moment, the image of their wedding night replayed in his mind several times before he could drift off to sleep. After he was done bathing, he got dressed and quickly head to the police precinct without waiting to eat breakfast. By the time Noah got there, he heard Mr Doyle was already locked behind bars. “I need to speak with him” Noah said to a detective who he met Lucas was. “This is Mr Owens, he is the victim” Lucas explained to the police officer who had looked puzzled with Noah’s sudden interference. “You are not allowed to speak with him yet sir, we will carry out the investigations and then we will inform you on the progress” the detective said and Noah begins to get impatient. Lucas had seen the look on Noah’s face as he stares daggers at the other man, he sensed there will be trouble soon. “Hmmm, Mr Owens, it’s preferable to leave the investigation to them, it’s certain he would be found guilty, you need not worry about that” Lucas tried to calm Noah down but the glare he got from him made Lucas bit into his lip, shutting his mouth up to never uttering any more words. “I will have a little conversation with him” Noah commanded which made the other man’s brows furrowed as he wonders who the hell Noah was to order him around. “Sir, you should have a seat right there, we need to__” The man was about to talk but was shut down by his superior who walked closer to where they were. “Mr Owens, it’s such an honor to meet you” a robust short man said while he smiled brightly to Noah. “I’m detective Winclair, please don’t be offended by detective Moore’s discourteousness, please come this way” The man said when he sees Noah wasn’t planning on responding. Detective Winclair had at once recognized Noah’s face when he sights him. He had often watched the news and he knows how influential Noah is, he knew they could all lose their jobs at once if Noah uses his influence. Noah followed detective Winclair to an investigation room and there, he met Mr Doyle who sat with his head bowed staring at the table. When he heard the door open, he looks up and almost choked on his saliva when he sights his fear. For Noah to have personally show up, he knew his life is totally over.
