Chapter 12 VictimsElainya The next day the men returned from the coast and I saw the horror of the battle wounds for myself. After only two attacks, the raiders had left. Some said the enemies were unreasoning beasts. Others spoke of giants, while still others felt they were men. In the daylight, only the king’s men were dead, the enemy apparently having suffered no losses, or else having removed their dead from the battleground. Horrified, I went from patient to patient in the chapel, the only room able to hold so many. We cleared the pews and made pallets on the floor.
