The party

Saturday afternoon,Jane is in her room getting dressed she puts on a purple sweat pant and a white hoodie ,white sneakers,a black cross bag and a knitted bucket hat,she looks at her self in the mirror,then with a satisfied nod she walks out of her room to the kitchen where her mother is frying plantains

Joyce: ( Jane’s mother notices her come in) are you going already, won’t you eat first

Jane: I’m not hungry

Joyce: okay oo,how did you say you’re going again

Jane: Cynthia and I are going together we’ll take bolt ( she takes a handful of already fried plantains and starts to walk out of the kitchen)

Joyce: I thought you said you aren’t hungry

Jane : I’m not

Joyce : you better eat first oo( the doorbell rings )

Jane: that’s probably her, byeeeeeee ( she runs and opens the door) right on time

Cynthia: let me go in and greet your mom

Jane: no,if you go in now she’ll force us to eat first

Cynthia: ehn it’s not bad na

Jane : here ( she stuff the rest of the plantains in her hand into Cynthia’s mouth) now let’s go( she drags Cynthia and closes the door)

Cynthia: did you book the ride ( she talks through the food in her mouth)

Jane : ( takes her phone out of her pocket and checks it) yes ,its 5 minutes away

The car stops in front of Samantha’s house, they pay before stepping out and then they walk over to the gate and ring the doorbell,a few minutes later a security guard comes out of the guard room and opens the gate for them,they enter into the house ,they look around the living room with wide eyes,all the furniture look very expensive and artsy, the big with flat screen tv,the marbled floors,the chandelier hanging in the middle of the room,but nobody is there

Jane : are we too early,or did we get the wrong address ( a woman dressed in a maids wear comes out of the kitchen)

Cynthia: I hear music

Maid: are you here for madam sam’s party

Cynthia: you mean Samantha right ( she asks raising her eyebrows)

Maid: yes,this way( she leads them to the pool side,where the speakers are booming with music and they see some people dancing and moving around)

Jane : so it’s pool party with no swimming suits amazing ( she says sarcastically ,the maid leaves)

Cynthia: was I the only one that heard the lady say madam sam

Jane : azin ,they even have the mind to be having maids( they laugh)

Cynthia:oh yeah,call Temi tell him we’re here ,shebi he said he’s already here

Jane : that’s true( she takes out her phone and calls Temi) hello ……where are you…yes we’re here……by the pool?....ehn we're also by the pool around the entrance side…okay( she ends the call) he's coming

Cynthia: okay( she nods then starts to look around the place,there are a lot of table with different kinds of food on them,also tables with snacks and small chops,tables with drinks, and a table with the three step chocolate sponge cake , Cynthia scoffs) what a stupid way to spend stolen money

Temi: finally ( he says in relief as he walks up to them) I’ve been here for over 30 minutes now

Cynthia: and look at me thinking you’ve been here for a while ( she teases)

Temi: I will not answer you

Jane: where’s the birthday girl

Temi: she came here a minute ago,then she went back inside, there are surprisingly a lot of people here

Cynthia: everybody want to be cool and be invited to cool parties

Jane: you think this is cool? ( She raises her eyebrows with a questioning look)

Cynthia: that’s why I said everybody Jane , we are not everybody

D.J/ M.C: ( he turns down the music) okay ,sorry for the delay everybody,I know we were supposed to start minutes ago,but we will start now ,so let’s just give the celebrant a minute to come down..( he turns the music back up)

Temi: when look at that woman in a white gown that is walking towards here ba( they both look at the slim , beautiful woman that he’s talking about)

Cynthia: ehn

Temi: that’s Samantha’s mother

Jane: it’s a lie

Temi: I know right ,the woman Is so beautiful

Cynthia: yes how did she end up with such people

Jane: shhh she’s coming towards us ( she signals as the woman approaches them)

Diana:( Samantha’s mother walks up to them) excuse me can one of you go in and call sam for me

Jane: o…okay ma

Diana: just ask the maid or the cooks they’ll show you her room

Jane: okay ma

Diana: thank you ( Jane throws a glance at Cynthia and Temi before going in)

Jane enters the living room but does not see the maid ,she walks into the kitchen too but the cooks aren’t there either,so she proceeds up the stairs , wandering around and peeping into some rooms looking for Samantha

Jane: na wa oo where is she( her attention gets caught by a scattering noise from one of the rooms ahead of her so she quietly walks towards it and slightly opens the door quietly and peeps into it,it’s a home office, for Mr Jonah probably,she thinks a and turns to leave when the noise comes again from the office ,she opens the door a little more and her eyes widen in shock,she sees Mr Jonah throwing bundles of money from bags into a big hidden safe ,he empties about three medium sized Ghana must go’s into the safe before locking it and pushing his bookshelf over it , perfectly concealing it , Jane's phone begins to vibrate and she gasps

Mr Jonah: who is there( his head immediately turns towards the door,then he quickly walks to the door and looks around but doesn’t see anyone,then closes and locks the door)

Jane quickly and quietly runs downstairs before answering her ringing phone

Jane: Temi what is it ( she almost yells at him)

Temi: abeg don’t swallow me oo, where are you Samantha is here now

Jane : okay I’m coming ( she ends the call and catches her breath, throwing one more glance at the direction of the office,she turns and leaves to meet Temi and Cynthia who are still standing where she left them)hey

Cynthia: hey( notices that something is off) are you okay

Jane: I’ll tell you guys later( Samantha walks up to them)

Samantha: I see you guys made it( she says with her eyes searching around them as if looking for someone) wh.. where’s Michael

Temi: Micheal couldn’t make it,it was so sudden that something came up,we definitely didn’t know that this would happen when you asked us to come( he expresses fake sympathy)

Samantha: why what came up( she looks angry and worried)

Cynthia: we don’t know..you can ask him when you see him( she smirks)

Samantha :(rolls her eyes angrily and marches away in her short pink Barbie dress and very slim high stiletto, mumbling as she goes ,she mistakenly twists her ankle by the pool side and falls into the pool) help ! help I can’t swimm!!!( She struggles to stay afloat while people jump in to save her and others use the opportunity to jump to the pool)

Jane: (she , Cynthia and Temi,stare at the site with their mouths open) now I get why it was a pool party with no swimming suits ( she chuckles) it sure “was”( she emphasizes referring to the people already playing and swimming in the pool while Samantha is still coughing up water by the pool side with her mother panicking)

Cynthia: okay now this is a party to remember ( she laughs)……..

After the party – Jane, Temi and Cynthia are walking outside along the street of Samantha’s house on their way home laughing and joking,when Jane suddenly stops

Temi: ( looks back at her) what?

Jane: I saw Mr buffalo hiding a huge amount of money in a safe( she says lowly but audibly)

Cynthia:(she and Temi’s eyes slam open) are you being serious

Jane: do I look like I’m joking

Temi: that’s why you were acting weird earlier

Jane: (she nods) and with the way he was acting,I don’t think it was legal money

Cynthia: ( she grabs Jane’s hand) lets go come and show me

Jane: (pulls her hand back ) are you crazy I was lucky that I didn’t get caught when he heard my phone ringing( she looks at Temi)

Temi: (he gasps in shock) was that when I called

Jane: yes you idiot

Temi: well how was I supposed to know

Cynthia: can’t you just take us there to see once

Jane : you’re crazy if you think I’m going back there ,let’s go home( she starts walking ahead of them)

Cynthia: Jane ,Jane come on just once

Jane: no

Cynthia: Jane

Jane: no………
