Chapter 13

Ayla stared down at the fresh graves, tears running down her cheeks. The graves belonged to the elders of each branch of the Fae. They were her people, her friends and they had given their own light to save her. All except one had been accepted back into the soil. Siya had been Undine and so she had to go back to the water. Ayla lifted her head and looked around. Wolves were scattered all around the property and Sentinels around them on guard and ready for anything. Ayla's long hair blew in the wind and she lifted her head to it, her eyes closed. She didn't know what to think or how to feel. She was confused about her mate. He had chosen the she-wolf over her but had mourned for her when she'd died. Soft footsteps approached and then stopped by her side. She knew without looking that it was Suri. They had become close in the very short time they'd known each other. " How are you feeling Ayla?" Suri asked softly. Ayla lifted her elegant shoulders and sighed. " I honestly don't know. My peoples elders are dead. I've been marked by a mate who doesn't want me and I am supposed to defeat a great evil and restore the balance of power and nature. Tell me my friend, how am I supposed to feel?" She replied. Suri chuckled softly and shook her head. " Sad, angry, overwhelmed? That's how I would feel, I would imagine." Suri said and Ayla chuckled mirthlessly. Ayla looked around again and spotted said mate some distance away, looking right at her. Andre had been walking on eggshells since Ayla was brought back by the Fae elders. Seeing one Fae was a miracle but seeing more all in the same room, seeing and feeling their light, was something altogether different. He couldn't explain the feelings that went through him when he saw the state that Ayla was in. It had felt like someone had ripped his heart out and he was watching it beat in their hands. He hadn't wanted to leave her side. If she died, he was ready to go with her. He would have done anything to join her. Indra had been so angry. She'd yelled at him at the top of her lungs. Thinking back now, he didn't know what he'd seen in Trish. She was spoiled, entitled and didn't care about anyone but herself. She had just been a body to sink into when the itch became too much. He regretted that now. Even though he'd marked her, Ayla hadn't spoken a word to him. Hell he didn't blame her. He'd chosen another woman over her, his destined mate and had ultimately caused her death." Give her time Andre and show her that you are remorseful. Show her that you will not turn your back on her again." Ayden said as he came to a stop on his right. Axel stopped on his left. " I envy you, young man. I would give my right leg to be mated to one of the Fae. They are beautiful, kind, protective and most of all, forgiving." Axel said. Andre sighed. He could feel everything Ayla felt now. She was in pain. He had hurt her worse than anyone knew and it would take a lot of work for him to show her how sorry he was.
