THE MAN IN THE SHADOWS...

2852 Words
Amara woke up before Damian. That fact alone felt like an achievement. She sat quietly on the couch in Damian's office, the memory of the night before replaying in her mind. His kiss. His hand against her face. The way he had asked her to tell him to stop. The way he had waited. And the way, for once, Damian Blackwood had looked almost peaceful. Amara looked toward him. He had fallen asleep in the chair beside his desk. His head rested against the back. His suit jacket was still on. His tie was loosened. For a man who normally looked perfectly put together, Damian looked unusually human. And annoyingly handsome. Amara frowned at herself. “Focus.” She quietly stood and walked toward him. “You know,” she whispered, “I could take a picture and destroy your terrifying reputation.” Damian's eyes opened. Amara jumped. “You were awake?” “No.” She stared. “You just answered me.” Damian slowly lifted his head. “I heard you.” “That means you were awake.” “No.” “You are impossible.” His eyes settled on her. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Amara's face became warm. Damian noticed immediately. “What?” “Nothing.” “You're thinking about last night.” Her mouth fell open. “Damian!” He almost smiled. “You are.” “You're too confident.” “You kissed me too.” Amara pointed at him. “I did not start that conversation.” “No. But you told me not to stop.” Her eyes widened. “You remember that?” “Yes.” “Unfortunately.” Damian stood. Amara immediately looked away. “Why are you looking at me like that?” “Like what?” “Like…” She stopped. Damian stepped closer. “Like I kissed you?” “Damian.” “What?” “We're at work.” He glanced around. “There is no one here.” “That doesn't help.” His expression softened. For a few seconds, the teasing disappeared. “Are you okay?” The question surprised her. “Yes.” “About last night?” Amara looked at him. She nodded. “Yes.” Damian searched her face. “Good.” “That is all?” “What else should I say?” Amara folded her arms. “Maybe something romantic.” His eyebrows rose. “Romantic?” “Yes.” “You expect that from me?” “No.” “Good.” She stared at him. Damian finally smiled. A real smile. Small. But enough. Amara's eyes widened. “There it is again.” His smile disappeared. “What?” “You smiled.” “I didn't.” “Damian, I saw it.” “Forget it.” “I can't.” His expression became serious. “Amara.” “Yes?” “Don't make me regret it.” Her teasing expression softened. “I won't.” For one beautiful moment, everything felt normal. Then Damian's phone rang. His face changed the moment he saw the caller. Mr. Harris. He answered immediately. “What?” Amara watched his expression become colder. “When?” His eyes moved toward her. Amara's stomach tightened. “I'll be there.” He ended the call. “What happened?” Damian grabbed his jacket. “Nothing.” She stared at him. He stopped. His shoulders dropped slightly. “Someone broke into the underground parking level.” Amara's expression changed. “Someone?” “Security caught the footage.” “Did they find the person?” “No.” Her heartbeat quickened. “Damian.” He looked at her. “Stay here.” She folded her arms. “No.” His eyes narrowed. “Amara.” “Together.” Damian sighed. “I hate that word.” “No, you don't.” He stared at her. Then opened the door. “Come on.” Amara smiled. “Progress.” “Don't.” “You say that every day.” --- The underground parking level was crowded with security officers. Amara immediately noticed the tension. Everyone became quieter when Damian arrived. Mr. Harris walked toward them. “Sir.” “Show me.” Harris led them toward a small security room. Amara stood beside Damian as the footage played. A figure appeared on the screen. Dressed in dark clothing. A cap covered most of the person's face. They moved through the parking level with purpose. Not randomly. They knew exactly where they were going. The figure stopped beside Damian's car. Amara's fingers tightened. “What did they do?” “Keep watching,” Harris said. The figure crouched beside the vehicle. Then stood again. And disappeared. Damian's face remained expressionless. But Amara knew him well enough now. He was furious. “Search the car.” “Already done.” “And?” “Nothing.” Amara looked at Damian. “Then why were they there?” Harris hesitated. “There was something else.” He placed an envelope on the table. Damian stared at it. Amara's stomach dropped. “Another message?” Harris nodded. Damian reached for it. Amara grabbed his wrist. He looked at her. “Together,” she said quietly. For once, he didn't argue. They opened it. Inside was a single photograph. Damian looked down. And froze. Amara saw the picture. It was old. Several years old. A group of people stood outside a construction site. Damian was among them. But another man stood beside him. His face had been circled in red. Across the bottom of the photograph were four words. YOU LEFT HIM BEHIND. Amara looked at Damian. His face had gone completely still. “Who is he?” Damian said nothing. “Damian.” His voice came out low. “Everyone out.” Harris immediately understood. “Sir?” “Now.” Within seconds, the room was empty. Only Amara and Damian remained. She looked at him. “Who is that?” Damian stared at the photograph. His hand tightened around it. “His name was Adrian Mercer.” Amara's eyes widened. “Mercer?” Damian looked at her. “His father owned Mercer Development.” Silence. Amara felt the pieces begin to connect. “The company.” Damian nodded once. “Adrian was his son.” “What happened to him?” Damian looked away. “He disappeared.” Her heart tightened. “When?” “After the acquisition.” Amara stared. “And you think…” Damian's jaw tightened. “I don't know.” “You don't know if he's behind this?” “No.” “Or you don't know if he's alive?” The silence answered. Amara became still. --- Damian left the office two hours later. Not to go home. To visit his grandfather. Amara went with him. She had not asked. She had simply entered his car. Damian looked at her. “What are you doing?” “Coming with you.” “Why?” “Because you look like you're about to drive into the ocean.” “I won't.” “Probably.” He stared at her. Amara smiled. “You're welcome.” Damian started the car. The drive was silent. His grandfather lived in an old Blackwood estate outside the city. Unlike Damian's modern home, the house felt like history. Portraits. Old books. Wooden floors. Memories everywhere. Damian entered without announcing himself. Amara followed. His grandmother appeared first. “Damian.” Her face immediately changed. “What happened?” “Where is Grandfather?” “Study.” Damian walked away. Amara stayed behind. His grandmother looked at her. “You came.” Amara nodded. “I thought he needed someone.” The older woman smiled sadly. “He does.” Amara's expression softened. “Does he ever admit that?” “No.” Amara laughed quietly. “Of course.” His grandmother reached for her hand. “Thank you for staying.” Amara looked toward the study. She wasn't sure how to answer. Because staying had become easier than leaving. --- Damian stood in front of his grandfather's desk. The photograph lay between them. His grandfather stared at it. “You knew.” Damian's voice was cold. His grandfather looked up. “Yes.” The single word changed everything. Damian became still. “You knew Adrian Mercer was alive.” “I suspected.” “You knew.” “I had no proof.” “You should have told me.” His grandfather stood. “You were barely holding yourself together after everything that happened.” Damian laughed bitterly. “So you decided to hide it?” “I decided to protect you.” Damian's expression darkened. “Don't.” His grandfather stared at him. “Damian—” “Do not use that word.” Silence. Amara stood quietly near the door. She understood. Protect. It was the same excuse. The same mistake. His grandfather sighed. “Adrian's father was a good man.” Damian's eyes remained on him. “He refused to sell the company.” “I know.” “He believed Blackwood Holdings destroyed everything he built.” “I know.” “Adrian blamed you.” Damian's jaw tightened. “I didn't destroy his company.” “No.” His grandfather's voice was heavy. “But your name was on the documents.” The words hit harder than Amara expected. Damian looked away. His grandfather continued. “Adrian disappeared shortly after his father became ill.” “Where did he go?” “We didn't know.” “Until?” His grandfather looked at the photograph. “Until I received a letter last year.” Damian froze. “What?” Amara's eyes widened. “A letter?” His grandfather walked toward a locked drawer. He removed an envelope. Damian's expression became dangerous. “You had this for a year?” The older man ignored the anger. He handed him the envelope. Damian opened it. Inside was a single sentence. WHEN EVERYTHING YOU LOVE IS TAKEN FROM YOU, YOU LEARN HOW TO TAKE TOO. Amara felt cold. Damian looked up. “You knew.” His grandfather's eyes were filled with regret. “I hoped it was an empty threat.” “You hoped?” “I didn't want to destroy what little peace you had.” Damian laughed once. There was no humor in it. “Peace?” His voice cracked slightly. “I haven't had peace since my parents died.” Amara's heart tightened. His grandfather became quiet. Damian folded the letter. His hands were shaking now. Barely. But Amara saw it. “Where is Adrian?” His grandfather shook his head. “I don't know.” Damian stared at him. Then turned toward the door. “Damian.” He stopped. His grandfather's voice became softer. “If Adrian is behind this, he won't stop.” Damian looked back. “I know.” His grandfather looked toward Amara. Then back at Damian. “He knows where to hurt you now.” Damian's eyes hardened. “I won't let him.” --- That evening, Amara finally convinced Damian to return home. “You haven't slept.” “I don't need sleep.” “You're not a machine.” “Debatable.” She glared. He sighed. “Fine.” Damian's penthouse was unusually quiet. Amara sat on the couch while he poured two glasses of water. “You're thinking too much.” He handed her one. “Impossible.” She took it. “Do you think Adrian Mercer is behind the messages?” Damian sat across from her. “Yes.” The answer came immediately. “And Celeste?” “Still a problem.” Amara sighed. “Wonderful. One jealous woman and one mysterious man who might want revenge.” Damian's mouth twitched. “You make it sound simple.” “It is not simple.” “No.” She became serious. “Damian.” “What?” “If Adrian is alive, maybe he wants answers.” Damian laughed bitterly. “You don't send threats because you want answers.” “Maybe he wants you to understand what he went through.” Damian's expression darkened. “I do.” Amara looked at him. “Do you?” “Yes.” The certainty in his voice surprised her. “I know what it means to lose people.” Her expression softened. “Damian…” “But losing people doesn't give him the right to hurt you.” The room became quiet. Amara looked down. There it was again. The fear. Not fear for himself. Fear for her. She reached across the table. Damian looked at her hand. She waited. After a moment, he placed his hand over hers. “I'm here,” she said. His eyes lifted. “You shouldn't be.” Her fingers tightened. “But I am.” Damian stared at her for a long moment. Then— His phone rang. Unknown number. Both of them froze. Amara looked at him. Damian answered. “Who is this?” Silence. Then a man's voice. Not distorted. Clear. “Hello, Damian.” Damian became completely still. Amara's heart began racing. The voice continued. “You've been looking for me.” Damian's expression hardened. “Adrian.” Amara stopped breathing. A quiet laugh came from the other side. “It's been a long time.” “Where are you?” “Close.” Damian stood. “Stay away from Amara.” The voice laughed again. “You always make things so easy.” Damian's eyes went cold. “Where are you?” “I'm already where you don't want me to be.” The call ended. Damian stared at the phone. Amara stood. “What did he mean?” Damian immediately turned toward her. “Call Noah.” Her eyes widened. “What?” “Now.” She dialed. Once. Twice. No answer. Her heart began pounding. “Maybe he's asleep.” “Again.” She called. No answer. Damian grabbed his keys. “Damian.” “Call him again.” She did. Nothing. Her hands began shaking. “Damian.” His eyes met hers. “Stay here.” “No.” “Amara.” “I'm coming.” His jaw tightened. Then— “Fine.” They rushed downstairs. Damian drove faster than Amara had ever seen him drive. She kept calling Noah. Again. Again. Again. No answer. “Maybe his phone is dead,” Amara whispered. Damian said nothing. His silence was worse. When they finally reached her apartment building, Amara was out of the car before he stopped completely. She ran upstairs. “Amara!” She ignored Damian. The apartment door was unlocked. Her heart dropped. She pushed it open. “Noah?” Silence. She walked inside. The lights were off. Her breathing became unsteady. “Noah!” Damian entered behind her. He immediately reached for the light. The apartment was empty. Noah wasn't there. Amara turned toward Damian. Her face had gone pale. “Where is he?” Damian checked every room. Amara followed. “Noah!” Nothing. Then Damian found something on the kitchen table. A phone. Noah's phone. Amara grabbed it. “No.” Damian picked up the piece of paper beside it. His face changed. “What?” “Damian, what does it say?” He looked at her. Amara stepped closer. “Tell me.” Slowly, Damian handed her the note. Her eyes moved across the words. NOW YOU KNOW HOW IT FEELS. Amara stopped breathing. Her fingers loosened. Damian caught the note before it fell. “No.” Her voice broke. Damian stepped closer. “Amara.” “No.” She shook her head. “No, no, no.” “Amara, look at me.” “My brother.” “We're going to find him.” Her eyes filled. “This is my fault.” “No.” “If I hadn't met you—” “No.” “If I had stayed away—” Damian grabbed her shoulders. Amara froze. His voice was firm. “Do not blame yourself.” Her breathing shook. “Damian.” “We will find him.” “How?” His expression became terrifyingly calm. The cold Damian returned. But this time— Amara understood why. “By finding Adrian Mercer.” His eyes moved toward the note. “And when I do…” Amara stared at him. Damian stopped himself. His jaw tightened. He took a breath. “We bring Noah home.” The words were steady. Certain. Amara looked at him. And despite everything— She believed him. Outside the apartment, rain began falling against the windows. Inside, Amara held Noah's phone tightly against her chest. The gala was tomorrow night. And suddenly, the event no longer mattered. The dress didn't matter. Celeste didn't matter. Even Damian's secret didn't matter. Only one thing did. Finding Noah. Because Adrian Mercer had finally stopped hiding. And he had taken the one person Amara would do anything to protect.
