Prologue - Third Person Narrative

725 Words
“What the hell was I thinking? How could I be such an i***t to sign up for this s**t! There is no possible way that I can go through with this. Can I?” Layla says out loud as she looks towards the enormous white Boeing-777 that she is about to board – talking to no one in particular. She feels the panic attack slowly approaching, blocking the sweet fresh oxygen from entering her lunges, causing her lunges to burn by the lack of it. Rapidly it starts to feel as if the dull grey walls of the Johannesburg International Airport are closing in around her, slowly suffocating her inch by inch. Layla spins around, nearly bumping into another passenger in the process, trying to find the nearest exit to take her back to the world that she knows and loves so dearly. Back to the house she has shared with her parents and her gorgeous Chihuahua ‘Coco Bean’, surrounded by all the happy memories she so dearly loves. If she goes back now, then she can easily make more of those loving memories with them but then she remembers…    She remembers the reason why she was about to board that plane, the reason why she was willing to spend an entire year in a foreign country – all alone might she add. Him! She remembers his handsome face, his smile that can make any girl swoon but most importantly she remembers all the words he had said about her on that awful day. The words that have kept her awake more times than she will ever want to admit to herself. The words that constantly swirl around in her mind, that same swirl causing her dinner to fight her as it suddenly wants to resurface. “Oh BOY! Not now” “This is the final boarding call for all passengers on RSA Airlines Flight 863-6. Please urgently make your way to boarding gate P9 for the Flight to JF Kennedy Airport in New York. We repeat this is the final boarding call for Flight 863-6 to New York. Thank you” The cheerful female flight attendants’ voice rings in Layla’s ear, breaking her train of thoughts. Layla quickly swallows to get her dinner back down, not wanting to repaint the airport floor and shunts that horrible memory to the back of her mind, back to where it belongs – in the past that is. ‘No Layla, you can and will not let them win! You will prove him wrong even if it costs you everything, because you are a strong sophisticated woman that is capable of everything you put your mind to. Now get your sassy ass on that plane before it leaves without you and any chance of future happiness along with it.’ She thinks to herself taking deep breaths to calm herself down. With her newfound determination she happily marches towards the boarding gate with her passport and 1st Class Ticket in hand. After Layla was shown to her window seat in the front of the plane, she quickly takes out her Rose Gold iPhone 12 and snaps a Selfie to post onto her **, well more like 15 Selfies to ensure that she gets the right lightning and shot. She decides the Selfie with her staring out of the window gives her the best look of sophistication, she quickly uploads it to her ** page with the caption ‘I’m so totally outta here BITCHES!’. She also uses the time to send her parents a text, letting them know that she is about to depart and that she loves them lots and lots. Quickly turning off her cell phone as the plane’s engines roar to life, she places it back in her handbag. ‘This is it Layla, no turning back now. You are officially going to be an Au Pair, in a foreign country, working with strangers, doing God knows what every day for the next 365 days. It doesn’t seem that bad right, how challenging can this year really be?’ She glances out of the window as the plane leaves the runway, looking down at the cities lights way down below, saying her final goodbyes to her home country.
