Chapter 4: A second encounter

835 Words
A few days after her wonderful day with Maya and Alex, Emily found herself walking through the park on her way to the library. She had a few books to return and was looking forward to browsing the shelves for something new to read. As she walked, lost in thought, she suddenly heard someone call out her name. She looked up to see Ben jogging towards her with a smile on his face. "Hey, Emily!" he said, out of breath. "Fancy seeing you here!" Emily felt a sense of surprise and a small twinge of anxiety. Her first encounter with Ben had been pleasant, but she wasn't sure how to feel about running into him again. "Hi, Ben," she said, smiling politely. "What brings you to the park?" "I come here to run every morning," he explained. "It's a great way to start the day. What about you?" "I'm on my way to the library," she replied. "I have some books to return." "Ah, a fellow book lover," he said with a grin. "What are you reading?" Emily told him about the books she had checked out, and they chatted for a few minutes about their favorite authors and genres. As they talked, Emily felt a sense of ease and comfort settling over her. There was something about Ben that made her feel safe and understood. After a few minutes, Ben glanced at his watch and looked apologetic. "I should probably get going," he said. "I have to get ready for work." Emily nodded, feeling a small sense of disappointment that their conversation was coming to an end. "It was nice seeing you again," she said, hoping that she didn't sound too awkward. "Likewise," he replied, flashing her a quick smile. "Maybe we can catch up again sometime?" Emily felt a sense of uncertainty. She wasn't sure if she wanted to see Ben again, but she didn't want to hurt his feelings. "Sure," she said, hoping that it was the right thing to say. As Ben jogged away, Emily couldn't help but feel a sense of confusion. She had enjoyed their conversation, but she wasn't sure if she wanted to pursue a friendship with him. As she walked towards the library, she felt a sense of anxiety and uncertainty gnawing at her. She knew that making friends was important, but she wasn't sure if she was ready to let anyone new into her life. As she browsed the shelves at the library, she found herself lost in thought, wondering what the future held for her and Ben. Over the next few days, Emily found herself thinking more and more about Ben. She couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to spend more time with him, but she also felt hesitant to take the next step. As she sat in her room, staring at her laptop, she couldn't help but feel a sense of loneliness. She missed her old friends and the familiar routine of her old life. But she also knew that it was time to move on, to start building a new life for herself. After a few minutes of scrolling through social media, Emily closed her laptop and decided to go for a walk. She needed some fresh air and a change of scenery. As she walked through the park, she saw Ben sitting on a bench, scrolling through his phone. She felt a jolt of nervousness in her stomach, but she decided to approach him anyway. "Hey, Ben," she said, smiling. "Hey, Emily," he replied, looking up from his phone. "What brings you here?" "Just taking a walk," she said, feeling a sense of awkwardness. "What about you?" "Same here," he said, patting the bench next to him. "Want to sit down for a bit?" Emily hesitated for a moment, but then decided to take the risk. She sat down next to him, feeling a sense of excitement and trepidation. As they sat and chatted, Emily found herself opening up to Ben more than she had before. They talked about their interests, their families, and their hopes and dreams for the future. Emily felt a sense of warmth and ease settle over her. There was something about Ben that made her feel safe and understood, and she found herself enjoying his company more than she had expected. After a while, Ben stood up and stretched. "Well, I should probably get going," he said. "I have to meet some friends for dinner." Emily felt a sense of disappointment, but she knew that she couldn't monopolize Ben's time. "Thanks for hanging out with me," she said, smiling. "Anytime," he replied, grinning. "Let's do this again soon, okay?" Emily nodded, feeling a sense of hope and excitement building in her chest. As she watched Ben walk away, she knew that she was ready to take the next step and build a friendship with him. It was scary, but it was also exciting, and she knew that it was the right thing to do.
