The heart knows first

1002 Words
Alice slowly opened her eyes. The first thing she noticed was the warmth. She was somewhere unfamiliar, yet strangely comforting. Her eyes moved around the room, taking in every detail. From the soft bed beneath her to the quiet glow filling the space, everything felt new... But not completely strange. Then her gaze stopped. A man was sleeping on a chair beside her. Alice stared at him, her mind searching desperately for an answer. Where had she seen him before? The dark hair. The familiar face. The feeling that came with looking at him. Then the memory returned. The old apple tree. The rain. The wolf. And the name that escaped her lips before she fell unconscious. "Liam..." Even though she didn't know where she was, Alice felt no fear. Instead, there was a strange sense of safety, like a part of her already knew she belonged here. She slowly tried to sit up, but her movement was unsteady. Her hand accidentally hit the glass of water beside the bed. Crash! The sound filled the quiet room. The man on the chair immediately woke up. His dark eyes opened, sharp and alert, filled with the instinct of someone ready for danger. But the moment he saw her, his expression changed. The coldness faded. His eyes softened. Because it wasn't a threat in front of him. It was Alice. The room was unlike anything Alice had ever seen. It wasn't a grand palace or a modern house, but a small wooden cottage that felt strangely alive. The walls were made of dark polished wood, decorated with simple carvings and warm lanterns that gave the room a soft golden glow. The scent of fresh wood, rain, and something familiar filled the air. A thick knitted blanket covered the bed, and beside it sat a small wooden table with a glass of water that she had accidentally knocked over. Everything about the place felt peaceful... Almost like home. Alice's eyes moved back to the man sleeping beside her. Liam. Even his name felt strange. She didn't remember him, but something inside her reacted every time she looked at him. Before she could understand the feeling, a soft sound came from the doorway. A large wolf stepped into the room. Alice froze. The wolf was beautiful. Its fur was silver, shining under the warm light like the moon reflecting on snow. Its eyes were calm and intelligent, watching her with a familiarity that made her heart ache. "Silver..." Liam said quietly. The wolf looked at him before walking slowly toward Alice. She expected to feel afraid. But she didn't. Instead, she felt a strange comfort, the same feeling she had felt when she woke up. As Silver came closer, Alice noticed something around its neck. A collar. Attached to it was a small pendant. Something about it pulled her attention. Slowly, she reached out and touched it. The moment her fingers brushed against the cold metal, a strange feeling rushed through her. A memory. A voice. A promise she couldn't fully hear. She looked closely at the pendant, trying to read the words carved into it, but they were too faded and unfamiliar. "What does this mean?" she whispered. Liam watched her silently. Because he knew. That pendant wasn't just a necklace. It was a piece of the life Alice had forgotten. Alice looked at the man in front of her. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The silence between them felt strange, not uncomfortable, but heavy with things left unsaid. Finally, Alice broke the silence. "Where am I?" Her voice was soft, still filled with confusion. Liam glanced toward the window, where the rain continued to fall against the glass. "You are in the woods of Elarion Vale." The name sounded unfamiliar, yet something about it felt strangely magical. "Elarion Vale..." Alice repeated quietly. She looked back at him. "Who are you?" A small pause followed. Liam looked at her, his expression unreadable. "I am Liam." She waited for more. He took a breath before continuing. "I am the prince of the Silver Wolf Pack." Alice's eyes widened slightly. A prince? A wolf pack? None of it made sense. Yet somehow, her heart didn't tell her to run. Instead, it told her to listen. Liam studied her face carefully before asking the question he had been afraid to ask. "And you..." His voice became softer. "Who are you?" Alice opened her mouth to answer. But nothing came out. Her brows pulled together as she searched her mind. Her name. Her family. Her home. Anything. But there was only emptiness. "I... I don't know." The words barely left her lips before tears filled her eyes. "I don't remember." Her voice broke. "I don't even know who I am." Liam's heart ached seeing her like this. The girl who once knew everything about him now looked at him like a stranger. He stepped closer and gently placed a hand on her shoulder. "Hey..." His voice was calm. "You don't have to remember everything right now." Alice looked at him through her tears. "My name is Liam," he said softly. "And I may not be able to give you all the answers yet..." He paused. "But I can promise you one thing. I will help you find them." For a moment, Alice simply stared at him. There was something about his words that felt familiar. Like a promise she had heard before. "But first," Liam continued, "I need to take you home." "Home?" Alice whispered. He nodded. "Yes." Before she could ask where that was, a loud sound of thunder shook the cottage. Liam's expression changed as he looked outside. The rain falling from the sky was no longer normal. It was dark. Almost black. "The Black Rain..." he whispered. Alice looked toward the window. "What is it?" Liam turned back to her. "It means we cannot leave yet." His eyes moved toward the storm outside. "Until it stops, this forest will not allow anyone to pass."
