FORTY-FOUR The DARKNESS had observed the funeral procession from the shadows between two of the houses in the street. He preferred to keep out of sight of the locals, until he was ready, and he felt certain they would rather not see him quite yet. He viewed the accident with the coffin, wondered what to do about the Time Traveller and his woman and waited while the burial took place. When it had fallen quiet, the villagers had gone back to their homes and the mourners adjourned to the pub to drown their memories and regrets, he stepped out on to the cobbled street. He enjoyed this part of the twentieth century, he found it liberating. Gave him a purpose. He carried a walking stick, although, he did not need to. But the feel of it in his hand, the tap of it on the cobbles, reassured him.
