Callie ELIJAH SLIPPED INTO my room that night. “You awake?” he whispered. “Yeah.” I’d been asleep earlier in the night, and strange dreams about Toby, Miss Trager and my mother had filled my head. In them, I saw my mother’s death over and over. She stood at the top of a staircase, then she and Miss Trager snapped the chord of magic between them, causing an explosion. Again and again the image played, and each time I felt more like I’d actually lived it. Elijah pressed a finger to his lips. “Ben’s roaming like a drunk toddler tonight,” he whispered, then tilted his head towards the corridor. “Let’s go somewhere he can’t hear us.” I pulled myself out of bed and followed after Elijah.
