[Declan] The unfamiliar scent wafted into my nostrils late at night while I was slowly drifting off to sleep, and I was suddenly fully awake. It was unmistakably the scent of a she-wolf which was not new, judging from my special ability to smell, and it was the sweetest scent I have ever perceived. At first the scent was mild, and lasted only for a few seconds, so that for a moment I thought that I had only imagined it. When I perceived the scent again a few minutes later, it was stronger this time, and didn't go away. I could swear now that I did not imagine it, and that I had never perceived the scent before.
