Chapter 5As Arrow and I left the tall grass, I scanned the surroundings for anyone watching. Noticing no one, I picked up the trail to camp, and Arrow followed. The path wound up the hill, rockier as we climbed. Few trees found a place to cling. Near the top, where my head rose above the ledge, the trail leveled to a wide plateau with a single baobab in the middle. Arrow stepped up to me. “Big tree,” he said. It was giant, even this far away. “The camp is behind it.” He was looking all around us, and I wondered if he’d seen the smoke through the branches. “They’ve fired up the hearth.” I pointed at the baobab. Facing the opposite direction, at the lake and forest below, he turned toward the broad tree, smoke rising behind it. “How many live there?” he asked. “Thirty-four and two on
