Chapter 11 — Visible

727 Words
Selene felt it before she saw it. The change had been building—slow at first, hidden beneath control, beneath denial. But now— There was nothing subtle about it. Her body was no longer silent. She stood near the edge of the room, one hand braced against the cold stone wall as another wave moved through her. Not pain. Not exactly. Pressure. Expansion. Life. Her breath came slower now. Heavier. This was wrong. Everything about this was wrong. Vampires did not change. They did not evolve. They did not carry life. And yet— Her body was doing exactly that. Another pulse. Stronger than before. Selene’s fingers slid down slowly— Hesitantly— Until they rested against her abdomen. She froze. Because this time— There was no mistaking it. A curve. Faint. But there. Her breath caught. “No…” The word broke. She pressed her hand more firmly against herself, as if denying it might somehow undo it, erase it, return her to what she had always been. Unchanging. Untouchable. But it didn’t disappear. It remained. Warm. Alive. Growing. Selene staggered back a step. This was no longer something hidden. No longer something she could pretend didn’t exist. It was real. Visible. And that meant— Everyone would see. The door opened behind her. She didn’t turn. She didn’t need to. She felt him. Kael stopped the moment he stepped inside. Silence filled the room. Heavy. Charged. Because he saw it too. His gaze dropped slowly. Fixing on her. On the change. Selene didn’t move. Didn’t speak. She waited. For rejection. For doubt. For hesitation. For the moment everything broke. It didn’t come. Instead— The air shifted. Kael stepped forward. Slowly. Carefully. Like approaching something fragile. Something dangerous. Something… his. “You can see it,” she said quietly. It wasn’t a question. Kael stopped in front of her. “Yes.” The word was low. Certain. Selene let out a slow breath. “This shouldn’t exist,” she said. Kael’s gaze lifted to hers. “But it does.” Her eyes narrowed slightly. “You don’t understand what this means.” “I understand enough.” Frustration flickered through her. “No—you don’t,” she said, her voice tightening. “This makes me a target. Not just for your wolves. Not just for my court. For everything.” Another pulse. Her breath hitched. Stronger now. Heavier. Kael saw the shift instantly. His hand lifted— Then paused. Waiting. Selene hesitated. Then— Slowly— She didn’t stop him. His palm pressed against her abdomen again. The reaction was immediate. The pulse surged beneath his hand. Stronger than ever. Kael inhaled sharply. His entire body went still. “It’s responding,” he said. Selene’s breath trembled. “I can feel it,” she whispered. Because she could. More than before. Not just movement. Not just presence. Connection. Kael’s hand remained there. Firm. Grounding. Possessive. “It’s getting stronger,” he said. Selene’s gaze flickered. “So is the danger.” Silence. Because neither of them could deny it. Kael’s expression hardened. “Then we prepare.” Selene let out a quiet, almost disbelieving breath. “You think this is something you can fight?” she asked. His gaze snapped to hers. “Yes.” No hesitation. No doubt. Just certainty. Selene studied him. And for the first time— She didn’t see a wolf. Didn’t see an enemy. She saw something far more dangerous. Someone who would not walk away. Another pulse. Stronger. Her body reacted instantly, her hand pressing over his, holding it there without thinking. The contact sent a sharp wave through both of them. Kael stilled. Selene froze. Because she hadn’t meant to do that. Hadn’t meant to— But she didn’t pull away. Neither did he. The moment stretched. “You’re changing,” he said quietly. Selene’s breath slowed. “I don’t know what I’m becoming.” The words were softer than anything she had said before. Honest. Kael’s gaze didn’t leave hers. “You’re not becoming anything,” he said. A beat. “You’re creating something.” The distinction hit deeper than expected. Selene’s fingers tightened slightly over his hand. Another pulse. Steady. Strong. Unavoidable. And this time— She didn’t fight it. She just stood there. Feeling it. Knowing— There was no going back.
