Chapter 12 They Came For Their Queen

869 Words
Selene felt them before they arrived. It wasn’t sight. Not sound. It was instinct. Ancient. Sharp. Unmistakable. Her kind. Her body went still, her hand tightening instinctively over her abdomen as a low, warning pulse moved through her. “They’re here,” she said quietly. Kael didn’t ask who. He already knew. His entire body shifted instantly—shoulders tightening, stance widening, presence darkening into something far more dangerous. “How many,” he asked. Selene’s gaze drifted toward the far wall. Toward the forest beyond. “Enough.” A beat. “They wouldn’t come lightly.” Kael’s jaw tightened. “They won’t leave with you.” Selene’s eyes flicked to him. “You don’t know that.” “I do.” The certainty in his voice sent something sharp through her. Because he meant it. Not hope. Not assumption. A promise. Another pulse. Stronger. Selene inhaled slowly. “They won’t just ask,” she said. “They’ll demand.” Kael stepped closer. “And if you refuse?” Selene held his gaze. “They’ll take me.” Silence. Heavy. Dangerous. Kael’s expression hardened. “No.” The word wasn’t loud. But it carried. A crash echoed from outside. Then another. The wolves reacted instantly. Growls. Movement. Shouts. War—at the edge of his territory. “They didn’t wait,” Kael muttered. Selene’s lips curved faintly. “They never do.” Another impact. Closer. The walls trembled. Kael turned toward the door— Then stopped. Because Selene hadn’t moved. She stood there. Still. Calm. Too calm. “You’re not coming with me,” he said. Her gaze sharpened. “You don’t get to decide that.” “I do if it keeps you alive.” “And if I don’t want your protection?” Kael stepped forward. Close. Dominant. Unyielding. “That stopped being your choice the moment they came for you.” The words hit harder than they should have. Selene’s breath stilled. Another pulse. Her body responded instantly. Kael saw it. Felt it. His expression darkened further. “They’re not getting near you,” he said. Selene let out a slow breath. “You think you can stop them all?” Kael didn’t hesitate. “Yes.” A beat. “I don’t need to stop all of them.” His gaze locked onto hers. “Just the ones who try to touch you.” The possessiveness in his voice sent a sharp heat through her again. Unwanted. Uncontrolled. Another crash. Closer. The door shook. Then— It exploded open. Darkness flooded in. Not shadow. Not absence of light. Something deeper. Vampires. They moved like silence given form—fast, precise, lethal. Five of them. No— Seven. Selene recognized them instantly. Her inner circle. Her executioners. “My Queen,” one of them said, bowing his head slightly. Respect. But not submission. “Come with us.” Selene didn’t move. Kael stepped forward instantly. Positioning himself between them. “She’s not going anywhere,” he said. The lead vampire’s gaze shifted to him. Cold. Calculating. “You stand in opposition to her own court,” he said. “I stand in front of her,” Kael replied. A flicker of tension. “You mistake protection for authority,” the vampire said. Kael’s voice dropped. “No.” A step forward. “I don’t.” The air thickened. Selene watched. Silent. Still. “Your presence here is already an act of war,” the vampire continued. “Do not make it worse.” Kael didn’t move. “Take another step,” he said, “and it becomes your last.” The threat landed. The vampires didn’t retreat. Of course they didn’t. They moved. Fast. Selene’s eyes widened— But Kael was faster. He met them head-on. The room exploded into violence. Claws. Fangs. Blood. Selene didn’t move at first. She watched. Because this— This was her world. War. But something was different now. Her hand pressed instinctively against her stomach. Another pulse. Stronger. And suddenly— She wasn’t watching as a queen. She was feeling it. Every movement. Every strike. Every moment he took a hit— Her body reacted. Her breath hitched. Her chest tightened. “No…” she whispered. Kael staggered slightly as a blade grazed his side. Selene felt it. Sharp. Immediate. Her power surged violently. “Enough!” The word ripped from her. The room froze. Power exploded outward from her in a wave that sent vampires crashing back, shadows lashing through the air like living things. Everything stilled. Silence followed. Selene stood at the center of it. Breathing unevenly. Eyes burning. Hand still pressed protectively over her stomach. “My Queen,” the lead vampire said slowly, recovering, “you are compromised.” Selene’s gaze snapped to him. “No,” she said. But it lacked conviction. “You defend him,” he continued. Selene didn’t answer. Because she had. Another pulse. Stronger. Unavoidable. Kael stepped back to her side. Not in front. Not blocking. Beside. A choice. “They’re not taking you,” he said quietly. Selene looked at him. Then back at her court. At the expectation. The judgment. The threat. And for the first time— She hesitated.
