Chapter 5: The Hunter’s Shadow

1107 Words
Aelira had grown accustomed to the hum of the Wildwood, its magic thrumming like a second heartbeat. But as the hours passed, she noticed a subtle shift in the air. The forest felt heavier, its shadows longer and darker than they should have been. Kael noticed it too. His jaw was clenched, and his golden eyes scanned their surroundings with an intensity that made Aelira’s skin crawl. “What’s wrong?” she asked, keeping her voice low. “We’re being watched,” Kael muttered. Aelira’s heart skipped a beat. “By what?” Kael didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he sniffed the air, his nostrils flaring. “Not a shadow wyrm,” he said at last. “Something worse. Something intelligent.” The ominous statement sent a chill down Aelira’s spine. She tightened her grip on the small dagger Kael had given her earlier. It felt woefully inadequate against the dangers of the Wildwood, but it was better than nothing. “Keep close,” Kael said, his voice gruff. Aelira obeyed, matching his pace as they moved through the forest. The air felt colder now, and the usual sounds of the Wildwood—birdsong, rustling leaves, distant howls—had fallen eerily silent. It wasn’t long before the silence was broken by a sharp, cracking sound. A branch snapped somewhere to their left, and Kael froze, his body tense. Aelira strained her ears, but the forest was deathly quiet again. Kael growled low in his throat. “It’s toying with us.” “What is it?” Aelira whispered, her voice trembling. “Something sent by the Wraith Queen,” Kael said grimly. “A hunter.” Aelira’s stomach churned. She had heard stories of the Wraith Queen’s hunters—shadowy figures who moved like wraiths and struck without warning. They were said to be unstoppable, relentless in their pursuit of their prey. “Can we outrun it?” she asked, though she already suspected the answer. “No,” Kael said bluntly. “But we can outfight it.” Before Aelira could respond, a low, guttural laugh echoed through the trees. It was a sound that made her blood run cold, filled with malice and cruelty. Kael’s growl deepened. “Show yourself,” he barked. The laugh came again, closer this time. “The Wolf King and his little fae pet,” a voice purred. “How quaint.” Aelira’s grip on her dagger tightened as a figure stepped out of the shadows. It was a woman—or at least, it had been once. Her skin was ashen, her eyes glowing with a sickly green light. Her hair was a tangle of black and silver, and her lips curved into a cruel smile. She was clad in dark, jagged armor that seemed to pulse with its own malevolent energy. “I am the Huntress,” she said, her voice like a blade cutting through the air. “And you, little princess, are coming with me.” Aelira took a step back, her heart pounding. “I’m not going anywhere with you.” The Huntress laughed again. “Oh, you misunderstand. It’s not a request.” Kael stepped forward, placing himself between Aelira and the Huntress. “You’ll have to go through me first.” The Huntress’s smile widened, revealing sharp, predatory teeth. “Gladly.” In the blink of an eye, she lunged at Kael, her movements unnaturally fast. Kael shifted into his wolf form mid-leap, meeting her attack head-on. The two clashed with a ferocity that left Aelira breathless. Kael’s claws slashed through the air, but the Huntress was quick, dodging his attacks with an almost inhuman grace. Her own strikes were precise and brutal, her jagged blades glinting with dark magic. Aelira watched in horror as the battle unfolded. Kael was powerful, his wolf form a whirlwind of raw strength and fury, but the Huntress was unlike anything he’d faced before. She moved like a shadow, her every attack laced with dark magic that seemed to sap the strength from Kael’s blows. Aelira’s hands trembled as she gripped her dagger. She knew she had to do something, but fear rooted her to the spot. “Run!” Kael snarled, his voice rough and guttural. Aelira shook her head, her jaw tightening. “I’m not leaving you!” The Huntress laughed again, her voice dripping with mockery. “How sweet. The princess wants to fight.” Before Aelira could react, the Huntress spun and hurled a wave of dark magic in her direction. The force of it sent Aelira sprawling, her dagger skittering out of reach. The Huntress loomed over her, her glowing eyes filled with malice. “So fragile,” she sneered. “You’re not worth the trouble.” As the Huntress raised her blade, Aelira felt a surge of defiance rise within her. She might be terrified, but she wasn’t going to die cowering. She reached deep within herself, searching for the spark of magic that had always been her refuge. The Wildwood answered. Aelira felt its magic surge through her, wild and untamed. Her hands glowed with a silvery light as she thrust them forward, releasing the energy in a desperate burst. The Huntress staggered back with a snarl, the light searing her flesh. “You little—” Kael didn’t give her a chance to finish. He lunged, his claws tearing through her armor and sinking into her chest. The Huntress let out a choked cry, her body convulsing as Kael ripped her apart. When it was over, the Huntress collapsed in a heap, her body dissolving into black smoke. Kael shifted back into his human form, his chest heaving and his face pale. Aelira scrambled to her feet, her heart still racing. “Are you okay?” she asked, her voice shaky. Kael nodded, though his expression was grim. “It wasn’t the last of them.” Aelira swallowed hard, her gaze drifting to the spot where the Huntress had fallen. “She said she was sent by the Wraith Queen. Why would she come after me?” Kael’s jaw tightened. “The Wraith Queen knows who you are. She knows your power.” “But I don’t even know my power,” Aelira said, her voice rising in frustration. Kael stepped closer, his golden eyes locking onto hers. “Then it’s time you learned.” Aelira’s breath hitched at the intensity in his gaze. She didn’t know what frightened her more—the enemies hunting her or the untamed magic within her. Either way, she knew one thing for certain: her journey through the Wildwood was far from over.
