Chapter 11: Into the Cradle

The air grew colder as Aelira, Kael, and their small group ventured deeper into the Wildwood. The trees twisted and warped, their gnarled branches clawing at the sky like skeletal hands. A heavy mist clung to the ground, muffling their footsteps and adding an eerie stillness to the already unsettling surroundings. The rogue sorceress, Nyssa, walked ahead with an air of nonchalance that Aelira envied. Her dark robes blended into the shadows, and her sharp eyes darted from side to side, scanning for any sign of danger. Behind her, Kael strode with his usual confidence, though Aelira could see the tension in his shoulders. He was ready to shift into his wolf form at the first sign of trouble. Aelira walked between them, her magic simmering just beneath the surface. She could feel the oppressive weight of the Cradle of Shadows growing stronger with every step. It was as though the forest itself were alive, watching them, waiting. “Charming place,” Kael muttered, breaking the silence. Nyssa glanced back with a smirk. “You haven’t even seen the worst of it yet, wolf king.” Kael’s golden eyes gleamed. “Looking forward to it.” Aelira rolled her eyes. “Let’s focus. The Cradle is still miles away, and the closer we get, the more likely we are to encounter the Wraith Queen’s minions.” Nyssa nodded, her expression growing serious. “She’ll know we’re coming. The Cradle is her domain, after all. Expect traps, illusions, and worse.” “Wonderful,” Kael said dryly. They pressed on, the forest growing darker and more twisted with every step. The once-vivid colors of the Wildwood had faded to shades of gray and black, and the air was thick with the stench of decay. After what felt like hours, they reached a clearing. In the center stood a massive stone archway, its surface covered in glowing runes that pulsed faintly with dark energy. “The gateway to the Cradle,” Nyssa said, her voice low. Aelira studied the runes, her brow furrowing. “These markings… they’re a mix of ancient Fae and druidic magic. The Wraith Queen has corrupted them, but I might be able to reverse the spell.” “How long will it take?” Kael asked, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. “Not long, if I’m not interrupted,” Aelira replied. “Then we’ll make sure you’re not,” Kael said, his tone leaving no room for argument. Aelira knelt before the archway, her fingers brushing the cold stone as she closed her eyes and reached out with her magic. She could feel the corruption woven into the spell, dark and tangled like thorny vines. Carefully, she began to unravel it, replacing the tainted energy with her own. As she worked, the forest around them seemed to come alive. The shadows deepened, and the mist thickened, swirling like a living thing. “They’re coming,” Nyssa said, her voice sharp. Kael shifted into his wolf form without hesitation, his black fur bristling as he let out a low growl. Nyssa raised her hands, fire sparking at her fingertips as she prepared to fight. The first shadowbeast emerged from the trees, its form shifting and amorphous. It moved with unnatural speed, its glowing red eyes locked on Aelira. Kael leapt forward, his massive form colliding with the creature in a blur of fur and claws. The beast shrieked, its body dissolving into smoke as Kael tore through it. More shadowbeasts followed, their movements fluid and predatory. Nyssa hurled a ball of fire at one, the flames consuming it in an instant. Another lunged at her, but Kael intercepted it, his jaws snapping shut on its neck. Aelira kept her focus on the spell, her magic weaving through the corrupted runes like a silver thread. She could feel the resistance, the dark energy fighting back, but she pushed harder, pouring her strength into the task. “Hurry, Aelira!” Kael called, his voice rough and strained. “I’m almost there!” she replied, her hands trembling with effort. The archway began to glow, the runes shifting from sickly green to radiant silver. The corruption was breaking, but so was Aelira’s strength. Sweat beaded on her forehead, and her vision blurred as she pushed herself to the limit. Suddenly, a deafening roar shook the clearing. A massive shadowbeast, larger than any they had faced before, emerged from the trees. Its body was a mass of writhing darkness, and its eyes burned with malevolent light. Kael charged at the creature, his powerful form slamming into it with enough force to shake the ground. The beast roared again, its claws raking across Kael’s side and leaving deep gashes in his fur. Nyssa hurled a stream of fire at the beast, but it absorbed the flames, growing larger and more menacing. “Aelira!” Kael shouted, his voice raw with pain. “I need more time!” she cried, her magic flaring as she fought to complete the spell. The beast turned its glowing eyes on her, its massive form charging toward the archway. “No!” Kael roared, throwing himself in front of the creature. The impact sent him flying, his body crashing into a tree with a sickening thud. Aelira’s heart twisted, but she didn’t stop. She couldn’t. With one final surge of magic, she broke the last of the corruption, and the archway flared to life, its runes shining with pure silver light. The beast hesitated, its form flickering as the light grew stronger. “Nyssa, now!” Aelira shouted. Nyssa didn’t hesitate. She raised her hands, summoning a massive wave of fire that engulfed the creature. The light from the archway intensified, and the beast let out a final, earsplitting roar before dissolving into smoke. The clearing fell silent, the oppressive darkness lifting as the archway’s light drove it away. Aelira collapsed to her knees, her body trembling with exhaustion. Nyssa rushed to her side, her sharp eyes scanning her for injuries. “I’m fine,” Aelira said, her voice barely above a whisper. “Kael—” Nyssa nodded, already moving toward the werewolf king. Kael lay slumped against the tree, his wolf form battered and bloodied. “Kael!” Aelira cried, scrambling to her feet and rushing to his side. He shifted back into his human form, his face pale and his breathing shallow. “Still… here,” he said weakly, a faint smile tugging at his lips. Aelira knelt beside him, her hands glowing with healing magic as she worked to close his wounds. “You’re an i***t,” she muttered, though her voice was thick with emotion. Kael chuckled weakly. “Takes one to know one.” Nyssa snorted. “You two can flirt later. We need to move before more of those things show up.” Aelira nodded, her hands trembling as she finished healing Kael’s injuries. He pushed himself to his feet, his movements slow but steady. “You did it,” he said, his golden eyes meeting hers. “The archway is active.” Aelira glanced at the glowing runes, a sense of grim satisfaction washing over her. “One step closer to the relic.” “One step closer to victory,” Kael corrected, his voice filled with determination. Together, they stepped through the archway, leaving the clearing behind and plunging deeper into the Cradle of Shadows.
