Chapter 19January 1: Ramon I could get used to this. Freeway driving in Los Angeles: ten lanes of concrete, impatience, and entitlement. Freeway driving in western North Carolina: four lanes of scenery. Sure, it wouldn’t be like this all the time; there was bound to be a rush hour here, too. But early in the morning on New Year’s Day, I had the road to myself. Even after leaving the freeway, navigating the small country roads to Angie’s new town, there was hardly any traffic.
