Episode 3

1015 Words
My head was pounding, and my stomach was in knots as Rachel and I waited in the hospital room all night for the doctor to come in. Finally, she arrived, introducing herself as Dr. Smith, and asked how I was feeling. After running some tests, the doctor dropped a bombshell: I was 14 weeks pregnant. My mind raced as I tried to make sense of it all. I had been on birth control, so how was this even possible? Rachel looked at me with concern, and I could tell she was wondering what I was going to do. "I don't know," I said, tears streaming down my face. Abortion crossed my mind, but I didn't know if I could go through with it. The doctor tried to reassure me, telling me to think about prenatal care and making lifestyle changes for a healthy pregnancy. But then Rachel asked the question I had been dreading: "Do you know who the father is?" I couldn't remember. My memory was hazy, and I didn't know who to turn to for help. Rachel promised to stay by my side, but the thought of being a single mother with no support overwhelmed me with fear and uncertainty. As Rachel comforted me, I couldn't help but wonder what my future held. Would I have to quit my job at the museum? Would I have to move back in with my parents? The possibilities were endless, but none of them seemed appealing. And as I considered my options, I couldn't help but wonder if abortion was the best choice after all. ......... ......... I sat on my bed, feeling the weight of the world on my shoulders. I was pregnant and had no idea what to do. As I stroked my cat Puff Puff, I knew I needed to talk to my parents, but I dreaded their reaction. I took a deep breath and dialed my mom's number. When she answered, I tried to sound upbeat, but her tone quickly turned sour when I broke the news. "How could you let this happen, Emily?" she snapped. "And who is the father?" Her judgmental words stung, and I struggled to hold back tears. "I don't remember," I admitted. My mom's response was callous and unsympathetic. "You're twenty-six years old. You need to start taking responsibility for your actions." My anger boiled over. "I am taking responsibility! I need your support, not your criticism!" But my mom continued to berate me. "You're throwing away your potential. You could have been a lawyer, but instead, you chose to pursue some silly art degree." I felt the weight of her disappointment bearing down on me. It was as if she cared more about her own aspirations for me than my well-being. My mom's lack of empathy made me feel more alone than ever. As I hung up the phone, I knew I had some tough decisions to make. But one thing was clear – I couldn't let anyone else's expectations dictate my choices, especially not my mother's. ........ ......... Tuesday morning found myself in the food court of the mall, snacking on some scrumptious nacho balls. Rachel was sitting across from me with an expectant look on her face. "So, have you made up your mind yet?" she asked, referring to my pregnancy and whether or not I'd keep the baby. I hesitated before responding. "I don't know. Maybe I should consider abortion." Rachel's eyes widened in surprise. "Really? Why?" I shrugged. "I just don't know if I'm ready for this. Being a mother is a huge responsibility. Plus, I have no idea how I'll afford it." Rachel gave me a sympathetic look. "I understand where you're coming from, but I think you'd make a great mom. And there are plenty of resources available to help with finances." I nodded thoughtfully, taking another bite of nachos. "You're right. I just need to think about it some more." Rachel's face lit up with an idea. "I know! Let's go shopping for baby clothes! That might help you get excited about the idea of having a little one." I couldn't help but laugh. "You're crazy, Rach. But sure, why not?" We spent the morning browsing the baby section of a department store, and I have to admit, seeing all the tiny clothes and accessories was pretty cute. As we left the store, Rachel turned to me with a grin. "See, doesn't that make you want to keep the baby now?" I smiled wryly. "You're good, Rach. But I still need more time to think." Later that evening, I found myself reading through the pamphlets the doctor had given me. My mind was racing with thoughts of the future. Could I handle being a mother? Would I be able to provide for the baby on my own? Feeling overwhelmed, I picked up the phone and dialed Rachel's number. She answered on the first ring. "What's up, Em?" she asked. "I've made my decision," I said, my voice steady. Rachel's excitement was palpable. "And?" "I'm going to have an abortion," I said firmly. There was a moment of stunned silence on the other end of the line. Then, Rachel burst out laughing. "Em, you little jokester! You had me going there for a second!" I couldn't help but chuckle. "Gotcha, didn't I?" Rachel playfully punched my arm. "You're terrible. But seriously, what's your decision?" I took a deep breath. "I've decided to keep the baby." Rachel let out a whoop of excitement. "That's amazing, Em! I'm so proud of you! Have you thought about names yet?" I rolled my eyes, but couldn't help smiling. "Not yet. But I'm sure you'll have plenty of suggestions." Rachel grinned mischievously. "Oh, I already do. And I have some great ideas for the baby shower, too!" I shook my head in mock exasperation. "You're too much, Rach. But I wouldn't want to do this without you by my side." "Of course, Em. That's what best friends are for." Rachel's voice softened. "And I promise, we'll make this journey as fun and exciting as possible."
