19 William listened a moment as Piper handed Brad two lists, explaining their contents. Tucking his hands in his pockets, he walked a small circle between his desk and the wall of windows. Gut instincts and first impressions hadn’t been wrong in his life. Things turned out badly when he didn’t follow those instincts and impressions. When Austin Wood, the first of several field agents he would be hiring, stepped into his office, William took the man’s measure in the five seconds he usually gave himself to judge a situation.
