Chapter 2

2440 Words
UNTIL I entered the university, I still couldn't get rid of the scenario I saw earlier in the bathroom. No matter how hard I try to remove that memory from my brain, I can't do it. It keeps coming into my mind. I was dumbfounded while my professor was speaking in front of me, I didn't understand anything in his lecture. Why did they do that dirty thing in the bathroom! I just fell on my desk when I remembered my other problem. I don't have a job anymore! I should have made a video earlier while they were doing that, and I will post it on social media! When I got back from that sneaky girl! I'm just thankful that the professor who teaches today is kind, I don't want any more problems. My body and brain were very tired on the way home, I felt drained of energy. I looked at the meager money in my palm. This is all I have left. I gasped for air. How about our meal tomorrow? I was just walking home to save some money for dinner. I have to endure for Mama and I's food tomorrow. Even though our house is a bit far from the university, I still walked it, I didn't care that the road was dangerous, especially at night. My life wouldn't be this difficult if my dad was still alive, mom wouldn't be addicted to gambling if she didn't get depressed when dad disappeared. If only dad was still alive, our family would be happy now. I was in my first year of college when my father disappeared, he died because of a hit and run and until now the police have not been able to catch who was behind it. If I had enough evidence to determine who ran over my dad, that criminal would be caught. But we don't even have solid evidence, the only evidence is the one who saw the act, and that's me. But I was the only witness of the night that happened, the night was too deep in those days. The car didn't have a number plate and its glass was too tinted, so it was very impossible for me to see who the animal was that did this to my dad. I just hope to get him some day. I believe that karma is more painful than the law. After I got home, I immediately cleaned the surroundings. The dining table is full of alcohol again, the sofa cover is a mess and the floor is full of cigarettes. I almost slipped because the floor was wet with alcohol. My heart is heavy while cleaning, it hurts me that our family has become like this. . . or can it still be called a family? I'm the one fighting against us. It hurts me to see our hearts drifting away from each other. 'Isn't the family supposed to work together? Isn't it heroic? But. . . why do I feel like a burden to mom? I stopped cleaning the living room when someone entered the door. Mom . . . I slowly approached her. It also hurts me when I see her become a mess. I don't know why her eyes are red and her body is weak. She held out her hand in front of me. "Do you have any money there?" "Mama, nothing—" I was startled when she suddenly slammed the door. "Son of a b***h, oh! Stupid money! I need it, I'm going to buy something! Get the money out!" Her eyes widened and she was very annoyed. I was suddenly afraid of what she asked. "Mom, there's nothing—" She suddenly groped me, I was struggling because she might have gotten the money in my pocket. I still need that because I will pay for the electricity. She forcefully took it from my pocket and just left me there dumbfounded. I don't know what to do with her. I tried to lift her even though I couldn't but she was also the one preventing her from lifting. I didn't notice that a warm liquid ran down my left eye. Shouldn't she be the one helping and understanding me? But why is this? Why do they bury me more? I feel like I'm just fighting for nothing, I'm fighting even when I'm tired. Tears gradually fell from my eyes as my shoulders trembled. Why Mom? Why do you abuse yourself? Why don't you cook for me? THE NEXT DAY I woke up because of loud knocking from our main door. I put on my clothes and went out of my room to see who was knocking. "Open the door!" Just by the voice I knew it was the man knocking, he was banging on the door. "Wait!" I opened the door backwards. The angry face of Mr. Swollen, the person Mama owes "G-Good day, Mr. Swallen." I fake a smile at him. How is this? I have no money here. What else should I pay him? "I always call Mrs. Miller on the phone, but she doesn't answer! It's good to get a loan, but when it comes to paying, it's hard to pay!" he yelled at me. I rubbed the back of my neck, I didn't know what to say to him. "Ahh, Mr. Swallen, just come back the next day. I don't have any money here," I pleaded. "It's not possible, it's always like that but you won't really pay! That's it! I'll just take your things when you reduce the debt you owe me!" I was shocked when he pushed the door to enter the house. I tried to stop him. He is doing this trespassing! When he got inside the house, he looked around. The corner of his lips raised when he saw my laptop on the table. No, no. I use it to study! He immediately went there and took the laptop. I stopped him, he can't take my things! "Mr. Swallen, don't take my laptop! I use it for my studies, have mercy on us!" I couldn't stop myself from screaming because of frustration. His eyes narrowed at me. "Why are you yelling at me?!" he said angrily. I swallowed hard, closed my eyes tightly and shook my head at him. "N-Not like that. I'm just shocked. I'm sorry," I said. "But please . . . not my laptop." He grinned at me, his eyes became sticky. He looked over my whole body with a malicious look. I hugged myself and felt dread. All the hair on my body rose when he grabbed the end of my hair and played with it. He looked into my eyes. "You can pay me yourself," he playfully said. I shook his hand playing with my hair. "Don't f*cking touch me." I said emphatically. His grin got bigger. He caressed my neck, but it didn't last long because I caught his hands. I let go of his hand. I hate looking at him. I poked and pointed at him. "Get out of here! Take that laptop and I might even call the police on you! Pervert!" My muscles trembled as I spoke. This old man is disgusting! He grinned at me even more. "I'll get back to you," he maliciously said. My body stiffened because of what he said. I pushed him out the door. I even heard his little laugh. When I successfully got him out of the house, I slammed the door shut. I'm weak, just now I was harassed by that. I leaned against the door because my whole body was shaking because of the fear in my chest. I closed my eyes tightly to calm myself down. Mom . . what kind of problem are you giving me? Why are you torturing me like this? If I have a dream, it's that Mama and I get along well. It hurts and it's hard to wake up every morning that we are not well and I can feel that there is no love at home, I really feel like I'm alone in a dark place and I don't know where I can find light. For others, my dream is shallow. . . for me no, because my dream is what will make me, what will make me happy. That I can tell myself that I still have a family, that I still have someone to run to whenever I have a problem. It was too deep for me. . . and too far, for me to achieve. I bit the inside of my lip because my chest felt heavy. I smiled bitterly. While I. This, I still haven't achieved anything in my life, I'm trying to make my dream come true, but my responsibilities to my mom are too heavy. And what's worse is that she doesn't help me. . . I simply laughed. She doesn't think about how I feel, when did she care about my feelings? I can not remember anything. I don't remember her asking me if I'm fine, how I'm doing, how I'm feeling? None. . . what's even more painful is that she doesn't really care about me anymore, I'm like a robot who will work for her. I don't even want to think about it, I do have a mother. . . but it's not like being a mother. I found myself staring at the ceiling with tears streaming down my face. I can't stop my tears from falling. I violently removed it from my cheek. But I still can't help it, I want to be angry with her because I'm also tired. I'm also hurt, I just want to feel that the family cares for each other. My tears fell one after the other, I bent down and wiped my face. I can feel the strong shaking of my shoulder. I'm thankful because mom is still asleep, even though it's still dark inside the house, it's me, alone. Alone . . . when will I feel true joy? Because I can't see, they said. The joy is in the end, but why do I feel that there is no end to the sadness and the pain? I stopped crying when I noticed that Mama was going to wake up, I immediately wiped my tears and stood up from sitting. Before he opened her eyes, I quickly went to the kitchen to wash my face. I made coffee for both of us. I heard her groaning. She seemed to have a headache. "Ouch, my head hurts." I brought the coffee to the table without looking at her. I can't seem to look at her, I feel hurt, I don't know if it's right to feel annoyed for her. Don't you have any respect when you are annoyed with your own parents? Sometimes, parents also do wrong, they are not always the right ones. I felt her eyes on me but I ignored it. "Get me some medicine," she ordered. I stopped mixing coffee, my jaw clenched. I ignored her and stormed out of there and entered my room. My chest is tight again. I can't talk to her now. "Son of a w***e! You can't be ordered! You're really lazy!" I heard her shout from outside my door. The pain in my chest worsened. She won't really change. . . I washed my face with my palm. I threw myself on the bed and cried there, I wanted to pour out my anger on her, so that I could get out of the room again. I don't want anyone to feel negative for my mom, she's my mom, no matter what happens. When will my life be peaceful? Those who don't have too much problems. I almost forgot what it feels like to be happy. When mom asked me to buy food but I couldn't give anything, so I had no other choice but to borrow money from my co-worker. If I don't do this, we won't have anything to eat all day. I finished what I was cooking before I got dressed to look for a job. I can't just stock up here at home all day. I need to look for a job for Mama and I. Mama is still asking me for more of her gambling but I can't give her any, and even if I have some money saved here I still won't give it to her, I have to be strict with money. I just ride a bike to look for a job, if I take a taxi I will use up the money I owe. It's just a small amount, enough for us to eat today. I saw a cafe that was looking for a cashier, I went in there and looked around the place, I saw a man who was cleaning the table. I immediately approached him. He looked at me, I smiled at him. ''Good morning, uhm. Because I saw the sign hanging outside. Are you looking for a cashier?'' I asked. He straightened up and let go of the rag, placing it on the table. He smiled at me beautifully. He seems like a good company. His face used to be gentle, as if he wouldn't do anything wrong. ''Good morning,'' he greeted. ''yeah, are you going to apply?'' he asked. His left eyebrow is raised. ''Yes, where is your boss?'' I looked around, looking for the owner of the cafe. It looks like he's not the owner, he looks like he's also a worker at this cafe. He grinned at me. ''The owner of the cafe is in front of you.'' He extended his hand to me. I looked at him in shock, I immediately apologized for my mistake. Maybe he won't accept me because of what I said. s**t. I immediately shook hands with him, I was able to look into his eyes a few times. ''What's your name?'' he asked. I see a small smile on his lips. ''V-Vanessa Muller, and . . . you?'' I wet my bottom lip. He smiled widely, causing me to see his perfect teeth. ''Harrison Smith. And don't worry, you're welcome. Actually, it's a rush when I look for a cashier, because I can't afford to be the one doing everything here at the cafe, especially as time goes on, more and more customers become my customers,'' he said at length. I looked at him in shock, my heart filled with joy. I thanked him again and again. Because of him, it looks like I can survive every day. Finally, I have a job!
