Chapter 4

Valentino POV That elevator ride was difficult. I didn’t expect to bump into her at this time, and I was too busy dealing with that sick f**k to keep track of what Sophia was up to today….damn, I sound like a stalker. “That was close, boss,” Owen states as we enter my place. “I know, she broke routine and caught me off guard.” “Do you think she recognized you?” “I’m not sure, but I’m sure if she did, she would have shown it; unless she’s still pissed at me for leaving the way I did.” “Are you secretly hoping she recognized you?” He asks in a teasing tone.“Shut up, O…don’t you have a wife to get back to?” I respond with annoyance, clear in my voice. “Yes, sir!” He responds with a fake soldier salute, which causes me to laugh and playfully push him towards the door. “Don’t worry, Valentino, you know I won’t reveal that you can be a big softy.” “You’re lucky you’re like a brother to me, O. If you weren’t, you would disappear.” “Yeah, yeah, I know you’re the big, tough mafia king….but you’re also a softie, and I love you too, man,” he states before running out of my apartment while laughing. Owen has always been like this whenever no one else is around us. I think it’s why we became brothers. We endured the struggles of learning the ropes for these roles we were born into. He had different life plans just like I did, but his father started teaching him when my father started teaching me. Many fathers were teaching their sons, but out of every one, Owen was the only one who could help take my mind off of Sophia and the crazyshit show that our lives became. When I had to pick my right hand, I didn’t hesitate to pick Owen. After I lock my door, I grab a bottle of cold water from the refrigerator and chug it within 2 minutes, then hop in the shower. My thoughts go to Sophia and how good she looked even in her casual clothes, and her being that close to me made my heart race. It took everything in me not to let her know who I was. After my shower, I throw on some gym shorts and sit on the couch while aimlessly scrolling through newly released movies since I did everything I had to do today. When I don’t find anything to watch, I lay my head back, and my thoughts go back to Sophia. Owen was right; part of me wishes that Sophia recognized me, but I know that probably wouldn’t be the best thing for her. The last thing I want is for her to have a target on her back because of me. Suddenly, the sound of someone banging on my door breaks me out of my thoughts. Owen is the only one who comes to my place, but he doesn’t bang like that unless something happened, so Igrab my gun while grunting annoyingly at not being able to enjoy my thoughts of Sophia. “What the f**k happened now, Owen!?” I ask angrily. Owen’s face lets me know it’s bad, and I won’t like what he’s about to say, which causes me to sigh: “Come in and close the door.” Owen does what I say, and there’s not a trace of a joking mood; he’s all business right now: “Valentino, you’re not going to like this; it’s about Sophia.” I stop walking and turn to look at him: “Where is she? I demandingly ask him while grabbing my gun off the counter I placed it on. “Whoa, Valentino, she’s okay, she’s home. I sent Carmen to check on her. She made an excuse that she just wanted to see how she made the condo her home. Carmen is strapped, but we know there’s no way anyone would be able to get to her here.” I let out a breath of relief. Carmen was the only female who was being trained when we were because her father was my father’s right-hand man,so he insisted she learn with us. Her father hoped that Carmen and I would form a romantic relationship, but I view her as a younger sister, and she and O hit it off. “If Sophia is okay at home, what the f**k is going on?” “I went to your casino office to take care of the backed-up paperwork, and amongst those papers was this letter.” He states while handing me a black envelope. When I look at the letter, my blood boils, and I want blood. ***The letter*** I know about your little b***h, Sophia. If I can’t have what I want, neither can you! “Do you know who f*****g sent this, Owen?” “I don’t know yet, but I’ll find out soon, and when I do, I won’t hesitate to take them out.” “No, when you find the bastard, take him to the cellar, and I’ll take care of him myself. He will learn who the f**k he’s messing with.”“You sure, man? I know you prefer not to get your hands dirty unless you really have to.” “Of course, I’m sure, O. I want to purposely make the bastard pay.” “Okay, you’re the boss, but make sure to let me get some licks in and have some fun too.” “Okay, now get going and find the son of a bitch and tighten security around Sophia without her noticing.” “I already doubled her security, and Carmen is going to be around her more than she already is…don’t worry, we’ll find the bastard soon.” “Good,” I state while sitting on the couch, leaning forward with my elbows leaning on my legs, holding one fisted hand with the other, and staring straight ahead. “I know that face. Whatcha thinking, boss?” “I’m going to personally protect her…the guys can still be there to watch my ass while I watch hers.” I let out a groan loudly while passing my hand through my hair: “I trust the men with her safety, butI need to be there…I can’t risk anything happening to her….I don’t know what I’ll do if someone gets to her because of who I am.” “I get it, Valentino, I would be the same way for Carmen, even though I know she could take care of herself….how do you plan to do it without her thinking she’s being followed by some creep?” “I don’t know…I haven’t thought that far ahead. I need to sleep so I can have a fresh head in the morning….Let me know if there are any updates; the time of day or night doesn’t matter.” “Alright, Valentino….don’t worry, Sophia will be fine, no one would get a chance to hurt her.” “Thanks, Owen.” After Owen leaves, I turn off the living room t.v and head to my bedroom, even though what I really wanted to do was run to Sophia’s apartment and do a sweep of her place to make sure no one bugged anything. I know it’s a ridiculous thought because this place belongs to me, and no one knows it’s where my men and I live except for us. It takes a while before I feel my eyes get heavy, and I doze off
