“Yes, mama. I know. I—” I squeezed the washcloth on my thigh, pressing the phone closer to my face. “Yes. Of course. I understand.” The call ended immediately after, the sound of the kettle filling the empty cabin. I forced myself to spread a happy smile on my face and took it off the mantle. Then it fell. I held back a scream as the kettle fell to the floor, my face grimacing as the hot water splashed over my legs. It hurt but I was used to it. “Are you alright?” Joseph’s voice had me opening my eyes, settling on him on his knees, his hand on the back of my leg as he stared at my skin before looking at me. “Answer.” I forced another happy smile. “I’m fine.
