16- Remy

When I woke up, the headache that followed hit me like a train. My body moved, picking the bucket next to me and vomiting. It was only on my third heave I heard the familiar voice yelling at the top of his voice, “—WATCH HER, DECKER! What the f**k happened last night?! Have you f*****g touched her you piece of s**t?!” Oh. f**k. f**k. f**k. “You’re gonna f*****g wake her, Cole.” “Oh, so you finally give a f**k about her but left her alone with those f*****g bastards?!” “I came back, Cole. And she needed to learn a lesson. If you were unwilling to teach her as her Father, someone had to.” Something crashed to the floor. A memory flashed through my head. Me on the table watching Decker leave then immediately throwing up on Buggy. Wolf holding me up, yelling at everyone to go away. I was sick, so f*****g sick, and then— Nothing. Just darkness. I stood and stumbled all the way to the living room, saying as loudly as I could, “Stop yelling at him, Daddy,” My vision took its time to clear but when it did, my father was staring at me like he was inches away from ripping me in half. “Why the f**k did she just walk out of your room wearing your shirt, Decker?” “Go back inside, Remy,” I ignored him. “If you wanna yell, take it the f**k outside and leave me alone. I’m not interested in one of your sermons today.” “Did she just—?” It all happened in a second. One second I was standing at the door, holding onto the frame for balance and the next, Decker was in front of me and my father had slapped him right across the face. It was meant for me. He wanted to hit me. “Get away from the door, Kane.” A low growl left Decker's chest, but he didn't move. His body stayed planted between me and my father. “Cole. You're not going to hit her.” “She's my daughter—” “And I'm your VP. You hit me again, and we're going to have a problem.” The silence that followed was suffocating. I'd never heard Decker speak to my father like that. Ever. My head was spinning too much to process it properly, but my chest felt warm. I wanted to wrap my arms around him so we cuddled. My father’s eyes on me kept me still. “I wanna talk to her.” “Talk to her later when she doesn’t feel like s**t and none of you would break something in my f*****g house.” Decker’s voice stayed calm. “I’ll send her to you in thirty minutes. Give her time to cool down. And you too.” Cole Calloway didn’t listen to anyone. I had that same problem but for some reason, the fire in his eyes cooled. He took a step back, then another, and after, he was gone. “Huh. You play us both like a fiddle—” Decker walked away. I should have taken my losses and left him alone. Maybe even basked in my shame but I didn’t feel shame. Even after what I’d done, Decker had taken a hit for me. My legs moved to follow. He walked fast. I’d learned to keep up early. “Decker, I’m sorry—” “You should sit.” We were in the kitchen. He backed me, putting on an apron. “I don’t think you’re in a state to walk.” All I could see was his back and yet… I was gonna blame the alcohol, but there was something about him being in the kitchen. With an apron. I knew what he was capable of, the things he could do. He looked so big here too, like he didn’t belong in the kitchen. But he moved like he knew everything down to its f*****g details, and his back— that back— He turned and placed a plate of eggs in front of me. “Eat.” I stared at it. “Scrambled?” He shrugged. “You like it.” “Yeah.” I shifted the plate away. “When I was twelve? I’d rather get a cup of coffee—” “Sit.” I did. Decker rested on the sink, his arms crossed as he stared at me. I couldn’t read his thoughts, I hated that I couldn’t. But he spoke finally, “You’re going to eat it, while I make you a coffee. Can we agree on that?” My head still throbbed like a b***h. “Do I get a hug?” “No.” “An aspirin?” “No. Punishment.” Of f*****g course. I sighed. “Fine. But give me some bread with it. And no, you don’t have to cut the crusts either.” Might have been my imagination but there was something of a smile on his face as he turned. The bread came in minutes with the coffee. He placed it in front of me, his eyes watching me as I ate and held back a moan. f**k, it was so good. He was the only one that knew how to use his seasonings. “You know, I don’t wanna blame you but my cooking has been s**t because of you. How ever can I redo… this? This is a work of art.” “I heard from the boys.” He nodded. “And I’m glad you like it.” I looked at him. Decker Kane was staring at me the same way he used to before… before everything went to s**t. Before he started avoiding me, before he started f*****g everything around but me. I looked away first. I couldn’t handle that. Anything but that. I could take his bullshit, but not him being gentle. Because that was who he’d been around me once upon a time. Gentle. Like being around me was the only way he could ever fully relax. I chugged the coffee down. It burned. I didn’t care. “Slow down.” “You’re not my dad.” “Thank f**k for that.” I choked on the coffee. Actually choked. Liquid sprayed from my lips and I coughed, my eyes watering as I grabbed a napkin. When I looked at him, his lips had curled into a half smile. For the first time my p***y went silent and the butterflies in my belly went on a rampage. Oh, f**k. I had to leave now. “I should go see my Father.” He watched me stand, his eyebrow raised. “Now, are you sure you’re—?” “Don’t f*****g act like you care now when you told everyone to have a go at me last night.” I blurted out. His lips pressed into a thin line. “We were having a lovely morning.” I faked a smile at him. “Can’t ever lose my edge around you.” Then I was out before I could see the look on his face. As my heart beat so loud I was certain it was an impending heart attack.
