CHAPTER 4 — BLOODLINE BURN

905 Words
Pain was the first thing Aria felt, a searing, bone-deep ache that curled through her chest and throbbed behind her eyes. She gasped and sat up sharply. Her hand shot to her collarbone, where the crescent mark still burned hot, as though it had been branded there. She was no longer in the forest. Cool stone surrounded her. The room was cavernous and strange, the walls carved with glowing sigils that pulsed with a pale, silver light. Shadows danced across the space, and for a second, Aria thought they moved with intent. The scent of ash and pine lingered heavily in the air. Obsidian Pack territory. She jolted at the realization. Her memories blurred at the edges — Kael’s voice, the fire, the wolf. That impossible moment. Footsteps echoed softly across the floor. A woman entered, tall and elegant, with hair like flowing ink and silver eyes that shimmered like starlight. She wore a cloak the colour of night, and something in her presence made Aria's skin prickle. “You’re awake,” the woman said gently. “That’s good. The blood moon doesn’t wait for anyone.” “Who are you?” Aria croaked. “Lira Moonwell,” she replied with a faint smile. “Witch, rogue, outcast. And a friend. Of sorts.” Aria didn’t trust her. She trusted no one, but her voice held something… something like recognition. Lira held out a smooth, grey stone. Symbols shimmered across its surface. “It’s a lunar stone. Sacred. The prophecy’s written in it.” Aria hesitated, then took the stone. The symbols rearranged themselves, burning bright. Without thinking, the words slipped out dmfrom her lips in a whisper unbidden: “The one who would wear the crown shall learn to drown, and in it, her mate too, she might burn." The room stilled. “Why does everyone keep saying that, I don't understand, I don't have a mate." Aria said, shaking her head, exasperated. " A crown, learn to drown, what's all this?” Lira looking at her intently as if to memorise her says "It's your destiny, your fate, this is you if you choose, wrong or right I do not know, but the outcome we will see, if you choose." Aria looking confused," but I didn't choose anything." “No,” Lira said, her expression unreadable. “But something chose you.” The mark on Aria’s skin flared, and a sharp breath left her lips. Her entire body tensed. “Where’s Kael?” she asked. Lira’s gaze darkened. “Fighting it. Fighting you. He’s bound to you by crimson and flame, Aria. The blood moon phase amplifies the pull between mates, and you’re more than just a mate.” “I don’t understand,” Aria whispered. “You will,” Lira said. “But not all at once, and not painlessly.” Before Aria could respond, the door burst open. Kael Rydan, the man who was once a teacher whose aura moved through the hallways of her school, now filled the doorway like a storm. His eyes burned violet, his breathing ragged. Sweat beaded along his forehead. He looked like a man standing on the edge of madness. “Leave us,” he growled at Lira. She gave Aria one last look. “Don’t let him push you away. That’s his fear talking.” Breaths still ragged, eyes still blazing, Kael said nothing until they were alone. “You should have kept your distance,” he muttered through gritted teeth. “I didn’t come here on purpose.” He advanced on her, fists shaking. “The mark changed when you touched the flames. You triggered the prophecy. Do you even understand what that means?” “No. But I’m starting to get the idea that it means I’m hunted, and possibly i'd kill you, or you'd kill me.” Kael laughed bitterly. “You’re not just hunted. You’re wanted by the Elders, dead. They think your power could collapse the old laws. That your very existence is a threat.” “And you?” she asked. “Do you think I’m a threat?” He stepped closer. Their breath mingled. “You’re more than a threat. You’re a goddamn flame set to everything I’ve built.” Then why did his voice shake? The tension between them twisted, hot and electric. Aria’s pulse pounded as his scent, earthy, wild, unmistakably Kael - flooded her senses. She felt it: the pull. “Why do you keep pushing me away?” she asked. “Because if I don’t,” he whispered, “I’ll never let you go.” Something cracked inside him. His muscles spasmed. His hands gripped his skull. He dropped to his knees, groaning. “Kael!” Aria moved to him, but the mark on her skin erupted with burning light. Kael howled. His body twisted, bones snapping, reforming. Dark fur tore through flesh. His jaw elongated. A monstrous, massive wolf now stood before her. Aria stumbled back in shock, breath caught in her throat. The beast was bigger than anything she had ever seen — obsidian black, eyes like burning violet flames, fur rippling with barely restrained power, but it didn’t attack. He drew near, unhurried, and then surprisingly, he bowed. The wolf lowered its head, submitting completely. Aria’s crescent mark blazed with radiant silver fire. From the far reaches of the room, a voice she couldn’t see whispered her name: “Luna"
