Chapter Three - The Devil You Can’t Kill

888 Words
Dominic Russo had inherited an empire. Nick had rebuilt one. Most people assumed he had taken control after his father’s death because there had been no one else. They were wrong. There had been plenty of men who wanted the Russo name. None of them survived long enough to wear it. Nick hadn’t won through brutality. He had won because he understood something the older generation never had. Information lasted longer than fear. Fear made enemies. Information made kings. His headquarters occupied the top five floors of a financial tower overlooking Manhattan. On paper, Russo Holdings specialized in international logistics, commercial investments, and cybersecurity. Every business was legitimate. Every tax return was clean. Every employee passed federal audits. Which was exactly how Nick wanted it. His organization no longer relied on extortion or street violence. It relied on ownership. Shipping companies. Construction firms. Private security contracts. Technology investments. Banks. Politicians who owed favors. Judges who preferred donations over questions. His empire looked legal because most of it actually was. That made it far more dangerous than the organizations still fighting yesterday’s wars. Nick stood inside the operations room, watching dozens of digital displays illuminate the walls. His right-hand man, Luca Romano, entered carrying a tablet. “They moved another eighteen million overnight.” Nick didn’t turn around. “Through which shell?” “Hawthorne Imports.” Nick’s jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. “Third time this month.” Luca nodded. “They’re getting careless.” “No.” Nick finally turned toward the screens. “They’re getting desperate.” With a swipe across the glass display, hundreds of financial transactions spread across the wall. To anyone else it looked like meaningless numbers. To Nick it was a confession. Every transfer connected to another. Every company belonged to someone. Every payment purchased silence. For five years he had been building the same file. Not one document. Thousands. Bank records. Wire transfers. Secret meetings. Audio recordings. Photographs. Names. Enough evidence to dismantle every criminal organization operating on the East Coast. Including his own. Luca folded his arms. “You could destroy them tomorrow.” Nick looked at the growing web of connections. “I could.” “So why don’t you?” “Because chaos fills a vacuum.” He enlarged one name until it dominated the screen. Vittorio Moretti. Moretti Shipping. Moretti Imports. Moretti Development. Seven legitimate corporations. Thirty-four shell companies. Hundreds of millions of dollars disappearing into accounts that officially didn’t exist. Beneath that… Murder contracts. Bribery payments. Arms deals. Human trafficking routes. Politicians. Judges. Police commissioners. Every secret. Every crime. Every lie. Luca looked at the screen. “You’ve had enough to bury him for over a year.” Nick nodded once. “And if I release it now?” “The Five Families go to war.” “They burn the city trying to protect themselves.” Nick locked the file again. “I don’t want revenge.” “I want an ending.” Silence settled over the room. Finally Luca asked the question no one else dared. “So why does Moretti keep sending killers?” Nick almost smiled. “Because he knows I have this.” He tapped the encrypted archive. “But he doesn’t know where.” “The only copy?” “The only readable copy.” “If you die?” “The archive dies with me.” Luca shook his head. “So you’re the lock.” “And the key.” Across the room another analyst looked up from his workstation. “We intercepted Moretti communications.” Nick walked over. “What do we have?” “The contract is still active.” “Any names?” The analyst hesitated. “No.” Nick expected that. Vittorio never exposed assets unless absolutely necessary. “What do we know?” “Only that whoever he’s sending has never failed.” Luca gave a low whistle. “Sounds like someone I’d rather never meet.” Nick’s eyes remained fixed on the screen. “So would I.” A satellite image appeared. Then another. One location after another. Assassinations. Disappearances. Executions stretching back nearly a decade. Every one of them professionally executed. No fingerprints. No witnesses. No patterns. Almost. Nick zoomed in on the timeline. “There.” Luca leaned closer. “What?” “The timing.” Every kill occurred within minutes of the projected opportunity window. Never early. Never late. Mechanical. Disciplined. Someone had trained this assassin to remove emotion from execution. Nick studied the files for another long moment. Finally he spoke. “Find out who they are.” “You think we can?” “No.” His voice remained calm. “But they can make one mistake.” “And when they do…” Nick looked out across the city lights. “…I’ll be waiting.” Miles away, in another part of the city, Vittorio Moretti stood alone in his study. On the desk before him sat a single photograph. Dominic “Nick” Russo. Across the bottom, written in Vittorio’s own hand, were only six words. Retrieve the archive. Kill the man. He closed the file. Tomorrow, he would summon his most trusted assassin. His own daughter. And unknowingly set into motion the one thing neither empire could survive. A choice neither of them had planned for.
