CHAPTER 3: EVER'S MATING DAY EMMA'S POV "Happy birthday, Emma," said Maddie as soon as I picked up her call. "Thank you," I pressed my shoulder to my ear, trapping the cell phone there, "How are you?" I set the cake batter in the oven and turned on the timer. No one else but the servants and I were around in the pack house. Today was Ever and the Sutherland twin's mating day. Of course, I hadn't been invited. I spent the past few weeks battering my wolf for making such a stupid mistake. For giving me false hope that I could be wanted by someone else. I was stupid to think the Alphas of the Ravenclaw pack would belong to a worthless Omega like me. If Ever knew what I had dared to dream of, she would haunt me with it for life. "Just down with a little heartache. How will you spend the day?" I was puzzled at the word 'heartache' but I didn't stress on it because there was still a lot to be said between us. "I'm baking a cake," I noted, sliding onto the island stool, locking my ankles together. "Can't the servants at Moon Brook do that for the Alpha's daughter?" I scoffed in my head. I was treated lower than my father's servants here. Even the workers sneered at me for just existing. They watched how my parents had little care for me and adapted to the pattern of bullying me. Father never cared when they raised their voice at me, or raised their hands to smack me in the face. He always turned a blind eye because I was deserving of a life of misery. During Ever's birthday, our parents would always throw her a big party, inviting all her friends and family friends over. I have never deserved a birthday. My mother said that to me. "They can't," I offered. Maddie let out a long sigh. "Should I come over?" We didn't mention how she had avoided me for weeks, ignored all my calls, and even messages. I knew what had happened. She had been threatened again to stop hanging out with me. I wasn't angry that she had succumbed, just a little bit disappointed that I wasn't worth fighting for. Besides, who was Ever to dictate my life or the lives of others? She was just a spoiled brat who needed a reality check. "You're at the ceremony, aren't you?" "Yes, but..." she drifted off, inhaling and exhaling deeply, like someone troubled. "I could leave. My best friend is home alone on her birthday. None of this matters-" "Stay." "Emma," she disagreed with me, sighing again, "You have to let me do this for you." "If it's about the past few weeks, I don't mind that you ignored me, Maddie." I popped my shoulders with a rueful smile on my face, "I know that Ever forced you to hang out with her." "She didn't force me. I wanted to. It was fun." "And I don't blame you!" I raised my voice unexpectedly, pinching the bridge of my nose while my elbow rested on the table. I shouldn't be angry at her for wanting to experience nice things, even though she had to abandon me as a condition from my sister. But I wished someone would stand up to Ever for my sake. That someone would shield me from all of this misery that I had always known. Maddie sniffled after a long pause. "There's something I have to tell you. Something I should have told you weeks ago." I didn't want to continue our conversation. Or else she would notice that I was not okay with what she had done to me. I acted like I was, but it was hard to consider that the only person I had ever considered a friend could do this to me. At least, she had been honest about it, though. "I need to check the cake," I lied, pushing the stool back and getting up. "Emma, please-" "Thank you for calling me, Maddie. I appreciate that you're the only one who remembered my birthday." Another lie. Because Ever remembered today. She set her mating ceremony on June 15, 2028, for a reason. Each year, she always came up with something to keep everyone occupied on my birthday, just to spite me. "I don't trust your sister. I think she lied about the Sutherland twins being her mate." I heard her rush the words before I could press 'end'. My arse hit the top of the stool again. "What did you just say?" "She has your scent, Emma. I caught her with your things on the weekend trip for her bachelorette. Perfume. Lotion. She's been stealing your stuff." "That's not possible, Maddie." I rushed out of the kitchen and ran upstairs to her bedroom. I would get in trouble if the staff saw me now but I had to know. "You deserve a better best friend because I...failed you. I should have told you sooner." The sound of her sniffling on the other end of the line was loud. "Goodbye, Emma. I hope you finally stand up to that b***h and pay her back for everything she's done to you." I barged into Ever's bedroom, not stopping to wonder how I had gotten past the lock with my weak Omega genes. In a blur, I began searching everywhere. Her closet. The drawers. My last stop was the hamper next to her bathroom. I turned it over, going through the clothes in it. When I saw the black dress with a deep v-cut neck and a high-side slit, a guttural cry came from me. This was the dress I had worn to the party and had a one night stand with the twins in. I couldn't believe that she had stolen it from me, selfishly. My scent still clung to it, and whiffs of that night came back to me with each inhale. Ever had to pay for this. She had crossed the line this time, and I would never sit still. "Where do you think you are going, Emma?!" The head maid with a leathery face admonished me as I marched outside through the front door. I didn't even turn her way. I kept walking because none of them deserved my words. "Emma!" She called again, and I ignored her again and again, hailing a taxi and heading straight for the Moonbrook mating stone. I arrived an hour and a half later, running as fast as I could to stop the mating and get my twins back. They had to know it was me. This was my one shot to change my horrible fate. The aisle that led to the stone faced me now, though it was a long walk down. Ever stood at the other end with them. She looked so beautiful, and if I didn't hate her to death, I would have shed a happy tear for her. She was holding their hands when she turned to the arched entrance, locking eyes with me. "Goodbye, Em," she mouthed from afar, the ghost of an evil smirk playing on her lips. "Stop-" But I had been cut short by the searing pain in my chest, and when I looked, I saw the end of a blade sticking out of me. A map of red spread quickly around the area. I sputtered, blood dripping down my chin. Then, the person behind me drew out the knife they had stabbed my heart with, ending my life. As I crumpled on the ground, before darkness took over, I saw Maddie standing under the archway, holding the bloody knife.
