CHAPTER 4: MOON FEST EMMA'S POV Ba-dum. Ba-dum. Ba-dum. Memories replayed in my head, from when I was a baby, up until the moment at the mating stone. Fast and uncontrollable. Ba-dum. I gasped loudly, jerking awake and coming face to face with my bedroom ceiling. I was wet with sweat as I instantly reached for my cell phone on the bed table. The time was ten am, and I had begun to wonder if I dreamt it...my death. But something was very wrong. This was Ever's bedroom, not mine-though my things were all over the place. I frowned, quickly reaching for my phone again and reading aloud today's date. "June 15, 2023." My heart sank. There must have been something wrong with my phone. I restarted it, but it was still showing the same date. I logged onto my socials. The posts, the trends-all of these were from 2023, but that was five years ago. How could I be here? I dashed into the bathroom, placing my hands on my cheek and scanning my face. I definitely looked younger, like an eighteen year old. But I was in my twenties, far older than the face staring at me now. My hand dragged through my hair as I chewed on my bottom lip. The last thing I remembered from my dream was the mating stone. Ever's smirking face. Then...the knife. I raised my eyes to the bathroom mirror as I remembered what had really happened. It came in flashes. The blade sticking out of me. The blood that sputtered down my chin. Maddie's face. It was not a dream. I rushed downstairs, almost tripping on the risers from how fast I ran, but I had to know what the hell had happened to me and why I was here. When I reached the bottom of the stairs, my mouth fell open. Everywhere was decorated with balloons spelling 'Happy birthday' and a big-sized piñata. A lot of faces were here, friends of Ever, family friends. The house was filled with people shouting. "Surprise!" Party blowers went off from all ends as confetti rained on me. I waved them away from my face, spitting it out of my mouth as I stared in utter shock. "Happy 18th birthday, our darling Emma!" My mother's smile hid her eyes as she held out my birthday cake for me. "Make a wish. Your father and I will grant whatever you ask for." They sported tiny birthday hats, which looked ridiculous on them. But what creeped me out the most was the smiles on their faces. It was as if I was loved by them. "Later," I muttered, and they kissed my cheek and hugged me one after the other. I had to suppress the gag. "Emma! Come here!" I heard my name from every corner of the house. Ever's friends were speaking to me like I had been friends with them for ages. It appeared that I was popular, which was a colossal wrong in the universe. Suddenly, I heard a piercing scream, and my attention darted to the front door. Ever was struggling with father's bodyguards, who wouldn't let her into the house to join the party. I frowned at the sight. Her friends inside the house just stood, laughing at her misery. I couldn't understand any of it. So I went outside to meet her, shutting the door behind me. "Ever?" I said, and the guards immediately stopped jostling her down the porch stairs. "Why are you screaming?" Her lips quivered hard. "You told them to keep me out, didn't you?! You're the reason they never loved me!" I frowned as an ice-cold realisation dawned on me. "What...what are you saying, Ever? Our parents love you-" "No!" She shook her head bitterly. "I'm a disgrace, even though I'm not an Omega like you. Their worst mistake. But I will make you pay, Emma. Mark my words." She turned and left, and I instantly remembered how I had been chased out of home during house parties because our parents never wanted to introduce me to their friends. Goddess... My fate had been transferred to Ever! * The Moon Fest was happening tonight. It was an annual werewolf event, and everyone had to attend with a plus one, or better yet, their fated mates. I always attended Moon Fests alone, but this time around, I had gotten about ten invitations from people I didn't even know. I picked up the skirt of my ball dress as I climbed onto the small bridge in the ballroom's premises. Frogs croaked in the beautiful blue river below. The cold night was coloured with strong winds, but a storm was far from arriving now. The full moon's reflection on the water was magnificent. I couldn't look away, not until I saw a vision of myself with a knife in my chest. Sucking in a rush of air, I had to find Maddie. She had to explain to me why-where had it gone wrong between us? Or could it be that she had always secretly hated me? I returned back to the hall, searching for her, but when I got a glimpse of her blonde hair, Ever was right there. They were laughing so hard together that it stung my heart like iron joints. Now, Maddie was best friend's with Ever, whom she would betray on my order. The dance floor suddenly cleared, and the song changed into a slow melody. Kale and Jayden came into my line of sight, looking so drop-dead gorgeous. Immediately, the host of the night announced, "This number is for the most eligible bachelors of the Ravenclaw pack! Ladies, strike your best pose, for they are in need of a partner." Five years ago, their father was still the Alpha of the Ravenclaw pack. Although he would soon lose his life in a murder, the Sutherland twins held the position of heir to the throne. My heart pounded in my chest as I realised what was happening. They were close, passing every girl before me. And I thought this must be it. The Sutherland twins would finally be mine. But when they came to me, they didn't stop their search, and my heart dropped to the floor. "Can we have this dance?" They said to Ever across the room, and she nodded, following them to the centre of the space. My face heated in embarrassment. I stomped out of the hall, full of rage, ending the night early. Of course, if my calculations were correct, this was the night of the one-night-stand. The night Ever would discover a matebond with the twins. I sat in the living room of the pack house for hours, waiting for my sister to come back, but she never did. I already downed two bottles of wine by the time our parents returned from the party. "Emma, is everything okay?" My mother asked worriedly, coming to flank me on the sofa. I shook my head. "No, mother. I'm not happy." "What's wrong?" My father asked, moving closer to us. "Did anyone annoy you? Listen, Emma, I will find them and destroy them if you say the word." I scoffed. I didn't want him to destroy anyone. "You said you will grant whatever I wish for." I stared off at the wall, nurturing my hate for my sister. "Ask." My father assured me. "Wish upon your father, and he will grant you your heart's desire." "Give me the Sutherland twins, father. They are my heart's desire."
