“Have I heard that before . . .” Lyosha rolled his eyes. Then he looked down into the book. A moment later he handed it back to Mitya.
“What did you learn?” he teased.
“Montezuma’s serpent is a snake thing that comes out of the mountains as a giant silvery cloud of cursed awfulness. The monster of Mogollon Rim is a naked guy that crawls out of the earth and is like eight feet tall and he rips off your skin . . . And the Phantasma Colorado is a red camel,” Lyosha summarized aloud.
“A red camel?” Garnet raised her eyebrows in the rearview mirror. “How’s that scary?”
“Have you ever been near a camel?” August cringed. “Those things smell like rotten fruit. And they’re mean. Plus, Loshenka, doesn’t the camel have a corpse tied on its back or something?”
