Chapter 10 – Shattered Bonds

995 Words
The cavern pulsed with silence after the crystal’s voice died away, a silence so heavy it pressed on Grace’s chest like a mountain. Every heartbeat felt loud in her ears, and each second stretched endlessly. “One among you carries a secret…” The words echoed in her mind again and again, planting seeds of doubt that grew too quickly to control. She looked at Samuel first. His jaw was tight, his eyes fixed stubbornly on the ground, refusing to meet hers. Was he hiding something? Could he have been working against them all along? Then her gaze slid to Tola. She stood rigid, her hand clenching her sleeve nervously, her eyes darting between them. “Tola,” Grace whispered, “tell me you don’t know what it means.” “I don’t,” Tola shot back too quickly, her voice sharper than usual. “Don’t look at me like that, Grace. I’ve risked everything to be here. You think I’d betray you?” Her words should have reassured Grace, but they didn’t. The crystal had stirred something, and once suspicion rooted itself, it wasn’t easy to tear away. Samuel finally raised his head. “We’re wasting time. That thing—” he pointed at the glowing crystal—“wants us divided. That’s the real trap. Don’t you see?” Grace wanted to believe him. She wanted to believe that whatever the crystal said was only a trick, a lie to sow discord. But deep inside, a quiet voice whispered: What if it wasn’t lying? Before anyone could answer, the shadow version of Grace stepped closer to the glowing stone. Its hollow hand hovered just an inch away, as if testing her resolve. Grace’s heart hammered. If that shadow touched the crystal, would it corrupt everything? Or worse, would it become her? “No!” she shouted, lunging forward. Her hand collided with the crystal a split second before the shadow’s. The cavern exploded with light. A blinding surge of energy shot through her body, so intense she felt her bones vibrating, her heart pounding as if about to burst. The air rippled, and she was yanked out of the cavern—out of herself—into something vast and endless. She was standing on a barren plain under a blood-red sky. Shadows towered around her, countless in number, their hollow faces turned toward her like judges in a trial. In the center of them all stood her shadow-self, now sharper, more defined, its face beginning to resemble hers. “You shouldn’t have touched it,” the shadow whispered, its voice her own, distorted. “Now you’ll see.” Grace staggered back. “See what?” The shadow raised its hand, and suddenly the plain shifted. Before her eyes, scenes unfolded like torn pages of a book. Samuel, kneeling in the dead of night, clutching something to his chest—an old, tattered letter. His face was drawn with guilt, his hands shaking. Tola, slipping away from their camp when she thought no one noticed, whispering words to the darkness, words Grace couldn’t hear but could feel. And then Grace saw herself—standing before the crystal, eyes filled not with hope but with something darker: desperation. “No…” she whispered. “That’s not true. None of this is true!” The shadow smirked, tilting its head. “Secrets are truth dressed in silence. And silence… destroys.” The visions shattered, and Grace collapsed onto her knees, gasping for breath. Her chest burned, and tears pricked her eyes. Was what she saw real? Or only an illusion meant to torment her? “Grace!” She blinked, and suddenly the cavern was back—the torchlight flickering, the ground trembling. Samuel and Tola knelt beside her, their faces etched with fear. “You disappeared,” Tola said, voice shaking. “For a moment, you were gone. What happened?” Grace opened her mouth but hesitated. If she told them what she saw, suspicion would only grow deeper between them. If she kept silent, though, she carried the burden alone. Her silence stretched too long. Samuel’s brow furrowed. “You saw something, didn’t you?” Grace looked into his eyes, searching for honesty, for any sign of the boy she trusted. But instead she remembered the image of him holding that letter, looking so broken. The c***k between them widened. Before she could speak, the ground beneath them rumbled violently. The shadow swarm shrieked in unison, retreating into the darkness, as though even they feared what was coming. From the far end of the cavern, the stone walls split open with a thunderous c***k, revealing a staircase spiraling downward into blackness. At its entrance stood a figure cloaked in silver. “You’ve come farther than most,” the figure said, its voice low and steady, filled with an unsettling calm. “But the Light Beyond isn’t for the divided. Choose wisely—trust, or fall.” Grace’s body went cold. Who was this figure? Friend, or yet another trick of the cavern? Samuel stepped forward, torch raised high. “Who are you?” The figure tilted its head. “A guide. Or… a grave-digger. It depends on your choices.” The words lingered like poison. Grace’s thoughts spun wildly. The crystal had spoken of betrayal. The shadow had shown her visions she couldn’t erase. And now this figure spoke of trust and ruin. Her heart ached as she looked at Tola and Samuel. For the first time since their journey began, she wasn’t sure if the people standing beside her were her allies—or the knives waiting to stab her back. But she knew one thing with terrifying clarity: Whatever path lay beyond that staircase, it wouldn’t just test their strength. It would rip apart the truth. And only one of them might come out whole. A mysterious figure has appeared, suspicion now poisons their friendship, and Grace is caught between truth and survival.
