Then there are vampires, the strongest, most powerful and scariest of all the beings in this world. They are not born, they are created. They are beautiful beings and can be very persuasive. They are to be always avoided. If they drink from you, they can pull you into their t****l, and they can take your memories from you.
The first vampire was created by a spell. A witch cast a spell using demon blood and fed it to a fellow witch, her husband. It changed him, no longer human, but without his powers or that of the demon the blood came from. However, over time his witch powers returned to him. The witch that created the vampire had done it to see what kind of being she could create. She was very unstable and many of her spells were terrible experiments. Some believed there was fey blood in her line. She marveled at all her creations. Most did not last like the vampire, but were dangerous, nonetheless, and were destroyed. She was a troubled and dark soul, which was reflected in her dark eyes, so close to the midnight sky. Her family could no longer let her live. She had started drawing too much notice from humans. So, to stop a new hunt for witches, she was killed by her family. They then went to kill her creation. However, the vampire could not be killed, no matter what method they tried. It was faster, stronger and more powerful than any other being. No human-made weapon could kill him. Once he was inside your mind, there was no stopping him. The vampire continued to kill humans and animals. One time, when he was bored, instead of killing a human, he fed it his blood, as he had been fed and realised he could turn others into beings like him.
There are two ways a vampire can be created. It can drain all the blood from a human and the human then drinks the blood of the vampire, creating a new vampire of the same bloodline. They are stronger and more powerful. They need to drink blood to survive and can no longer consume human food, though liquids such as wine can be. The other way is a human can die with an amount of vampire blood in its system. They are called dhampir, half vampire, half human. They can move more easily in the human world and can still eat human food as well as consume blood. Both require the drinking of human blood on awakening to complete the transition. The first vampire realised the benefits of the dhampir and created them to protect and serve him and his family. The first vampire became the first vampire king.
It is said that the vampires have their own realm alongside earth with a portal, their own citadel. But only a vampire can enter. The first vampire king wanted a place away from humans and other beings. A haven for vampires. He had witches create a place that can only be accessed through a portal. It is said that the citadel is large and well-guarded, protected by magic. The dhampir are trained here, and the royal family spend most of their time there, rarely venturing back to the human world and all other vampires come and go as they wish. No other being has ever seen the citadel except the witches that created it. It is believed the vampires killed those witches to keep the place a secret. It can be accessed from portals all over the world. These portals are visible to only vampires and requires blood to open the portal and pass through.
The final two chapters in the book covered angels and demons. With only a couple of pages on each. Not much is known about either being other than what has been written in the bible. Demons have been led by Lucifer since their fall after the heavenly war when God’s chosen were divided. The angels who chose the side of God were allowed to remain in heaven, only leaving when God required them to complete a task outside the heavenly realm. Both demons and angels could come to earth through portals that only opened between the earth and the realm they came from. Demons cannot get to heaven and angels cannot get to hell.
My mother and grandmother never mentioned anything about portals. I had never read anything in the grimoires about portals either until this book, and it seems there are a lot of them out there. Well, I hadn’t found anything, yet. Perhaps, after my reading on different beings, I would look into portals. I could find a portal and talk to a demon or an angel.
After I finished the book, I decided it was time to get more answers. I thought the forest behind our house would be the best place to start looking for different beings. The next day was a crisp clear sun-filled day with rich autumnal colours filling the trees and I wandered off into the forest behind our house. I did not tell anyone where I was going. I had my book, our cook made me a sandwich and off I went in search of any beings that might be out there. My mother was busy with her charges and my uncle and brother were in the study discussing court and what was required of him. Ethan was not happy, and Uncle Matthew was trying to impress on Ethan the importance to our family of making a good impression at court. Ethan hated these meetings, he would always choose to be with me, with a small part of him knowing he had to learn about court for the future safety of our family. I knew this was my opportunity to get out without being seen.
I started walking, not really with a plan in mind. I headed towards the river I loved so much when I started to feel a pull towards a small clearing not too far from where I was. I walked straight into the middle. It was small, but full of wildflowers, surrounded by very old, very tall trees. It was a perfect circle, and it matched the complete circle in the sky made from the top of the trees. There was the scent of wildflowers, and something else on the warm breeze flowing through the space.
In a small child’s voice, I called out ‘hello.’ It felt like I was being watched, someone was here. I heard the rustle of leaves and turned towards the sound. A pretty young girl walked out from the trees. Her skin was much darker than mine and her hair was almost the colour of fire. When she got closer, her eyes were dark green, they matched the colour of the leaves of the trees at the height of spring. She looked like what I pictured the earth would look like if she was human. She smiled down at me and reached out her hand.
‘Hello,’ she answered in a sweet, light voice; It sounded like she was singing. I took her hand, she shook it and laughed.
‘What’s your name?’ I asked in my quiet, childlike voice.
‘My name is Lily, what’s yours?’
‘My name is Katherine. Are you fey?’
‘Yes, I am, and you are a witch.’
‘I am, how did you know?’ I asked in surprise.
‘Witches smell a certain way, usually like one of the four elements. You smell a little like rain and fire. Then they have their own scent mixed in as well. I can also feel your power.’
I took a deep breath, but I couldn’t smell it. All I could smell were the wildflowers in the clearing. I looked up at her and realised she smelt like the wildflowers in the clearing. I smiled when I realised that. ‘You smell really pretty.’
‘Thank you, Katherine.’
‘What do other beings smell like?’
‘Well, werewolves smell like animals. They smell like a wolf mixed with human, but the wolf side is much stronger. Vampires smell like metal, like blood, but a little sweeter. I don’t like the way they smell. But not too many come through this forest, so I don’t have to smell them often. Though there have been a couple here recently. Their scent is not as strong now, but they were here for some time. Watching someone. My parents wouldn’t let me leave our house until they knew they were gone.’
‘Hmm. I wonder who they were watching.’
Lily looked at me for a little before deciding if she should answer. ‘They were watching you.’
‘Me? why? Do they want to eat me?’
‘Ha ha, I am not sure. But they are drawn to your power and were watching your house. That is why I came to this clearing. That is why beings are drawn to this forest. I could feel your power when you walked into the forest. I think I should get you home to your family, they will be worried.’ She took my hand and led me to the edge of the forest near my house. I turned to ask her about her family, but she was already gone.
I walked back to the house. No one had even realised I was gone. I don’t think I was even gone that long, but it felt like hours to me. I was so proud of myself; I had finally met another being, and they talked to me. It was easier than I thought it would be. She was drawn to me. Perhaps as my power grew, more beings would be drawn to me and I wouldn’t have to seek them out.
Not realising the danger of having beings come to me, each day I went to the forest. I could feel power in there. After Lily had taught me how each being smelt, I was much more aware of just how many travelled through the forest and how close they came to our house. Then the more I entered the forest, the more beings arrived to wander through. It was then I understood it was about me and how much danger I could be in. Lily was right. The vampire had been there for me and now more beings were arriving. I didn’t see Lily again for a while.
With practice, I could easily tell the difference between the animals of the forest and the werewolves that passed through. I could tell when vampires had hidden among the trees and which trees they stood nearby. There were a couple of other scents I could not place. Perhaps demons and angels. One smelt a little like ash and the other like sunshine, though I wondered if that was more a fey scent as I now knew there was a small clan of fey in this forest. Not many witches ever passed through the forest. But I already knew about witches. I wanted to know about other beings, especially angels.
