Edwin POV “Alfie tell one of the maids to get the girl ready for tonight “ I ordered but Alfie looked at me as if I had grown a pair of horns without moving from where I was sitting on my bed. “Sir?” I frowned at him for a moment wondering if he was fooling around. “The girl, Lizzy” He still didn’t move, he stared at me silently as if he was debating with himself what he should do or say next, but then finally sighed, thinking I didn't hear but I heard him. “She is still in the dark dungeon” “What do you mean by that?” “She is a prisoner. You sent her there, your highness?” It dawned on me. How could I forget? How many days has it been? I was too busy with the endless meetings I had been having with the council. It's been five days! “Let's go,” I told him leading the way, I was certain that she must have learned enough lessons. My beast growled angrily at me. It had been happy since I made that decision but I didn't pay it any attention. When I pulled the door of the dungeon open, my beast whimpered even more at the sight in front of me. She was lying there almost lifeless like a rag doll, looking broken and battered. Her hair fell all over her face hiding her expression, but her legs were drawn up into her stomach and wrapped under her body like some sort of blanket. There was no movement whatsoever. She was so still and quiet that even when we stepped closer I noticed that there wasn't anything alive in her. Maybe I thought too quickly because when I tried to touch her, she flinched from me as if I was a plague that would hurt her. I backed away confused. This shouldn't be happening. My beast was growling in anger and agitation at me and the sight of the girl, but I ignored his complaints. Instead, I walked toward Lizzy cautiously trying not to startle her. My hands cupped her face carefully- too carefully in this state, she looked so fragile that it almost scared me. Her eyes looked dead. How was it possible that someone could look so empty? My fingers tingled against her face . Something flowed through them. I hadn't felt anything alive- the energy was raw and I was sure that she had to feel something. The skin underneath her eyes and nose was dry. My beast snarled again and my heart rate quickened. I looked at her one last time and slowly let my hands fall from her cheeks. I caused this, I thought. I almost felt guilty. And that was the second time today. “Is she alright?” “Help her up” I ordered the guard and that he did. I noticed how her feet shook under the weight of her body, she seemed really weak as she clung to him. My beast begged to touch her, to help her but there was no way I was going to let myself do that. That would be making a mess out of everything else. When we were about to make it down the stairs, her legs wobbled the more her body moved forward. The guard held her more tightly as he guided her step by step. They were barely past the first three steps when I noticed that her grip on him was loosed and before I could do anything, Lizzy stumbled, rolling through the rest of the stairs towards the floor. A loud thud followed, startling both the guard and me. The guard looked at his hands like he couldn't believe she had just slipped right through him. He turned to look at me in fear but I ignored him, running towards the girl who was now lying unconscious on the floor. I knelt beside her immediately, checking her pulse and breathing. Nothing. Was she dead? It sounded so foreign to me. My beast was yelling now and I could feel myself losing control. “Call the healer!” I yelled at the guard who was still looked like he was in shock. He nodded frantically. I picked her up and she in bridal style . Her head rolled onto the crook of my shoulder while a strange feeling began spreading throughout my chest, a strange sensation that felt like a mixture of sadness and regret. She felt so light, this girl weighed nothing than a feather and I began to hurry to her room where I dropped her on the bed and checked her pulse. Nothing, I could detect no signs of life. It wasn't long before the healer came, he was panting as if he had run down here which I know he did, no one wanted to have their head on a platter of gold for disobeying me. “Your highness” he managed to breathe out, bowing curtly to me. “What happened to her?” He demanded “She is not breathing” The healer opened his mouth to respond but then froze and looked at me like I had grown two heads. He moved to the girl and took out wet herbs and rubbed them over the girl and it was only when he finished did he turn to me. “She is not dead, she is alive but barely” Relief washed over me “That's why you are here” I countered. “You're supposed to tell me what the hell is wrong with her” He gave me a pitying look “I'm sorry sir. Her heartbeat is very weak, so is her energy. I will do my best, let's be hopeful” “And if she wakes up?” He hesitated for a moment “I am not sure yet” “Fix that!” I roared at him as if he had caused all of these problems and he looked at me as if he had never seen a me before.“But.. I need permission from the king” he hesitated but I silenced him with a glare that told him more than my words would have said. After that I left him while the reality of what my anger had made me do dawned on me, I could lose her- lose everything I worked hard for, after waiting so long, after the search. Edwin what have you done?
