(Confusion)
Lizzy
A single guard led me through to the cold hallway that stretched on forever. We didn't speak and I didn't look at him. I had learned long ago not to ask questions. It is the most dangerous thing you can do in this situation. Edwin didn't come with me, he seemed to gladly throw me to the wolves, literally.
His father sat at the large table, sipping tea, as we entered the room. My stomach dropped into my boots at the sight of the man.
He looked up at me once, and it was with pure disdain.
“Sit” He pointed out to a chair, but I stood where I was, unable to move a muscle.
The man sighed heavily. His eyes flicked to the guard next to me who stood impassive like a statue. And the guard shoved me down into the chair like a sack of potatoes. Then he left the room.
He continued sipping his tea and I sat there, unsure of what to expect. It wasn't until he finally spoke that I realized just how much time had passed. “I suppose Edwin has given you an explanation on why you are here .” His eyes were dark grey and icy cold. A chill ran down my spine. His voice was deep and rough as if he had been growling for many years. The air seemed to be sucked out of the room when he spoke.
I didn't nod or speak. Instead, I stared into those eyes as they stared back into mine, trying to read something hidden within their depths, some indication of my fate.
“Why has nothing happened yet?” The King sighed again and set his cup down.
I didn't understand what he meant. Was something supposed to happen? Was he expecting something? Or was he asking because I hadn't done anything? That thought made me uneasy and my hands started shaking.
“Why hasn't my son gotten better yet?”He yelled. I jumped up and he grabbed the edge of the table so hard his knuckles turned white. The wood groaned under the force of his hand. His face became livid.
“I don't know what you are talking about sir… king” The words were slow and careful from my mouth and I could feel my pulse quickening and heart pounding against my rib cage.
He looked at my face. The hatred and anger radiated off of him in waves. His nostrils flared angrily and his lips curled into a snarl. There was a flash of lightning outside and a thunderclap that shook the windows so hard that a few glass shards fell onto the floor. He paid them no mind. His gaze locked with mine, as though he knew what I was thinking.
“What did he tell you?” He asked after a while.
“He said I was fated to him and his brother and I had to remain until then, prophecy was fulfilled. I don't know what the prophecy is, I don't know what I am expected to do, he didn't tell me anything else” My throat dried up as I finished speaking.
He raised an eyebrow as he leaned back in his chair.
“Hmmm, the moon goddess could have chosen any other maiden from here, yet she chose a clueless prostitute” He chuckled bitterly before sighing heavily. His voice was still laced with contempt and his face still glowed red from the fury.
I frowned slightly as shame washed over me. Of course, the king had run a background check on me.
“The guard will take you back to your room, I will send for you when I figure out what to do with you” The king stated and a guard appeared behind me, grabbing my arm gently.
We walked silently, neither of us speaking and when we were in the hallway, there seemed to be commotion as men ran past us. Even the guard who was with me seemed confused.
“What is going on Kyle?” He stopped one of the guards and asked with urgency.
Kyle replied without hesitation, “It's Prince Edward. He tried to kill a guard who took food to him, bit him in the ear and stabbed him with steel, he isn't healing” Kyle explained.
“Damn, he must have gone too far” The guard cursed before turning away and leading me further through the hallway and we stopped in front of the room.
As I went inside, the words replayed in my head again. Was that who I was supposed to be to also be fated to? To someone who would hurt the other person and probably kill? My head swam in confusion as I lay in bed, staring up at the ceiling. This was all so confusing, my life suddenly felt different.
I sat up again, there was no way I could accept this new life, I had to run away. If this were destiny, I'd rather die fighting than submit to it.
I couldn't risk being caught in here, so I opened the door gently and peeped around. Thankfully the hall was empty, I hadn't taken two steps when I heard noises and I ran back into the room
. I closed the door and sat back down, waiting quietly, my heart thumped loudly in my chest and sweat dripped down my neck and forehead. The sounds grew louder and closer. Fear coursed through my veins. Were they coming for me? What had I done wrong? Did they see me in the hallway?
I almost shir myself. It was only when it passed that I could breathe relief.
It was something else, maybe someone else but it definitely wasn't me.
It was then that I decided that I couldn't leave now, there was tension in the castle. I had to stay put and plan properly but I was definitely going to leave.
Tonight.
