SHE took in a deep breath, steadying her nerves, and swiped her thumb across the screen, accepting the call. “Hello?” She said shakily.
“Avery.” Avery gasped softly at the sound of her friend’s voice. “Hi, Myra.” She responded.
“Oh, Avery.” Myra said, sounding like she was about to cry. So was Avery, so she stayed quiet. “I’m so sorry I didn’t call. Hei-ran told me everything you’re going through, I…” Myra’s voice trailed off.
“It’s okay.” Avery said quietly. “How are you?”
Myra drew in a shaky breath, finally responding. “At first, I was…horrible. I couldn’t believe he was gone, I—I still can’t. Zach…he had so much to do. I miss him so much.” Myra’s voice broke.
“Me too.” Avery said, a sob breaking out.
“I can’t believe your family is being so mean to you.” Myra said.
