Persephone had always believed that power came from light, the warmth of the sun, the budding of flowers in spring, the first breath of summer. But now, as she stood at the edge of the river Styx, watching the souls drift by like shadows lost to time, she realized how wrong she had been.
The Underworld had a power all its own. And it was beginning to seep into her bones.
"You're not going anywhere," Hades’ voice came from behind her, low and dangerous, yet strangely calm.
She stiffened, her hands clenched into fists. She hated that his presence was everywhere, following her, hovering like a storm cloud waiting to burst. She had tried to ignore it, to convince herself that there was still something of the girl she once was, but every day, it felt like that girl was slipping further away.
“I’m not your prisoner,” she said, turning to face him, her voice filled with a sharp defiance she didn’t fully feel. “I never agreed to be any part of this… kingdom of yours.”
Hades stepped closer, his gaze dark, unreadable. “You don’t have to agree. You’re here now, Persephone. This is your world as much as it is mine.”
His words hit harder than any chains. She had heard him say it before, but now, with the weight of his presence bearing down on her, she felt the truth in it. This place, this world, was beginning to pull her in, inch by inch, until there would be no escape.
But she wasn’t going to let him have that satisfaction. Not yet.
"I don't belong to you," she spat, her voice trembling with a blend of anger and fear. "You can't make me."
Hades' lips twitched upward, almost imperceptibly. "Oh, I can make you, Persephone. And you know it."
She swallowed, the lump in her throat threatening to choke her. He had done it before, broken her will with a few choice words, a glance, the power of his presence overwhelming her. She could feel the shadows closing in, creeping around her as though they were alive, wrapping around her limbs, testing her resolve.
“I’m not a toy for you to control,” she said, more firmly now, though her hands still shook. “If I stay here, it will be on my own terms. You can’t”
"Your own terms?" Hades interrupted, stepping closer, his dark figure blotting out the dim light. "Do you think you have any terms left? You've been here for weeks. You've already chosen your side. The Underworld is not some place you can simply leave and return as you wish."
The anger in her chest rose again, but this time, there was something else beneath it, something colder, more calculating. She had been in the Underworld long enough to feel its pulse, its rhythm. She had learned how to manipulate the shadows, how to call on the spirits of the dead, how to bend the very atmosphere to her will. Maybe, just maybe, she could use all this power to break free from him.
“I’m not staying here, Hades,” she said, more to herself than him. “I won’t be a queen in a kingdom of shadows.”
Hades’ expression shifted, his eyes flashing with something darker than anger. It was almost… pity. "You think you have a choice? You don't, Persephone. Not anymore."
He reached out, his hand brushing against her cheek, his touch cold as ice, but there was a strange tenderness to it, like a predator toying with its prey. "You were never meant to be the innocent flower you once were. You were born for the shadows, Persephone. And when you accept that, when you finally let go of that light, you will see the truth."
Her breath caught in her throat. She hated him. She hated the way he spoke to her, as if she were some helpless thing to be molded.
But a part of her, a dark and dangerous part, wanted to listen. Wanted to embrace the power, to embrace him.
"No," she whispered, pulling away sharply. "I refuse to be your pawn."
Hades watched her with an unreadable expression, then slowly, deliberately, took a step back. "We'll see how long that refusal lasts, Persephone. The Underworld has a way of bending even the strongest wills."
With that, he turned and disappeared into the shadows, leaving Persephone alone on the banks of the Styx.
