CHAPTER 003

Aubrey reached for his hand, gripping it tightly. "But I don’t want another. I want you." For a moment, the world seemed to stop, the sounds of the night faded, and all that remained was the intensity between them. Lancelot clenched his jaw. "If anyone finds out you are here…" "I don't care," she interrupted. "I will fight for us." He sighed, looking at her with both admiration and fear. "Then you are braver than I am, my princess." “So do you want me to leave?” The thoughts of her walking away felt like the pain of a blade plunged into his chest. Before he could stop himself, he cupped her face gently, his thumb grazing her cheek. Aubrey closed her eyes, savoring the warmth of his touch, just when he was about to plant a kiss, the moment shattered. *Gasp!* A sharp gasp echoed through the training grounds. They turned swiftly, standing a few feet away, eyes wide with shock and something far more dangerous, was Princess Anna. Anna's lips curled into a cruel smile. "Well, well. What a lovely secret you’ve been keeping, dear sister." "Anna, listen…" "Oh, I am listening." Anna folded her arms. "And now I know exactly how to save our kingdom. Father will be thrilled to hear about this." Panic surged through Aubrey. "Please, Anna. If you care for me at all you wouldn't say a word." Anna's face hardened. "Care for you? The way you have always been cared for? No, dear sister. It's my time now. And I will not let you ruin our family name for some knight." Lancelot took a protective step forward, but Aubrey placed a hand on his chest, stopping him. "Anna, if you do this... you will be dooming me," Aubrey pleaded. Anna tilted her head. "Then consider it destiny fulfilling itself." And with that, she turned and ran toward the castle. "NO! Anna!!" Aubrey cried out calling out, but it was too late. Sir Lancelot grabbed her hand. "We have to leave. Now!" "But… if we leave, we will be hunted down like animals… my father King Ragnarok won't spare you.” "Princess Aubrey, if your father hears about this, he will have me executed. And you... You will be forced to marry Dominic immediately." Tears welled up in her eyes, but she nodded, right now the only thing they could do now is run away and avert the cruel fate that awaits them. Hand in hand, they disappeared into the darkness, with the fate of the kingdom hanging in the balance. Lancelot and Aubrey ran through the shadowed corridors, their breath heavy with fear and urgency. But no matter how fast they moved, the guards were faster. The alarm had been raised, the bells have been ringing non-stop. A chorus of armored footsteps thundered toward them, torches illuminating the castle walls. "Stop them!" a guard bellowed. Lancelot tightened his grip on Aubrey’s hand, his mind racing for an escape route. But before they could reach the hidden passageway leading out of the castle, a wall of soldiers blocked their path. Aubrey gasped as steel-tipped spears pointed directly at Lancelot’s chest. “Stand down,” commanded a familiar voice it was that of King Ragnarok. The torches cast an eerie glow on his face, his eyes cold with fury. Beside him stood Anna, her expression unreadable. Aubrey’s heart pounded. “Father, please…” “Silence.” The king’s voice was like ice. “You have disgraced this family and yourself Aubrey, say no more.” Lancelot stepped forward, his posture unyielding despite the danger. “Your Majesty, I… love,” “Seize him.” King Ragnarok ordered Before Lancelot could react, soldiers grabbed him, yanking him away from Aubrey. He struggled, but there were too many. Aubrey screamed. “No! Please, Father, don’t do this!” The king turned to her, his disappointment cutting deeper than any blade. “You have left me no choice, Aubrey.” Lancelot met her gaze, his eyes filled with unspoken words. “Take the knight to the dungeons. He will be executed at dawn.” Aubrey felt the world collapse around her. She turned to Anna, desperation in her voice. “You can’t let this happen, you are my sister, how could you?.” Anna’s lips pressed into a thin line. “I did what I had to do.” Tears burned Aubrey’s eyes as she was dragged away, her fate sealed with her father’s next words. “You will marry Dominic at sunrise.” As the castle doors slammed shut, behind her, Aubrey realized this was no longer just about love. It was about survival, and she would do whatever it took to save Lancelot even if it means revoking her birthright. She would do whatever she can to help Lancelot but how? Her younger sister Anna was not in any way, as trusting as she used to be, she just betrayed her. Princess Aubrey just couldn't come up with any plans to either save herself or Lancelot. If only her elder brother was here, then she wouldn't have to go through any of this. ****Throwback**** Five years before princess Aubrey was born, King Ragnarok had a son, he did everything he could to train him in the right way. Prince Galen grew up to be the best fighter and warrior the Kingdom of Maliover ever had, when Princess Aubrey was born, he took care of her and treated her with love.
