They plunged into the shallow ravine, hiding behind the overhanging roots of a large tree. Sam panted with pain, while Bella covered her own mouth to keep from making a sound.
The footsteps were getting closer.
Closer and closer.
"WHERE IS HE?! THE TRAIL OF BLOOD IS MISSING HERE!"
"KEEP LOOKING! SHE MUST BE HIDING AROUND HERE!"
Sam, Bella, and Layla held hands, their bodies trembling with fear. Cold sweat poured down their faces.
The sound of footsteps was right above their heads.
Second after second felt like hours.
"THERE'S NOTHING HERE! TRY LOOKING TO THE EAST!"
"COME ON! DON'T WASTE TIME!"
The footsteps slowly moved away.
The three of them still dared not move for a few minutes. Only when they were sure it was safe did they breathe a sigh of relief.
