The Big Storm

Kaelen wiped sweat off his face as he put another log on the pile. The sun was hot, and the air smelled like trees. He stopped for a moment and looked at the hills around his village. "Kaelen! Stop daydreaming and get back to work!" his dad called out. Kaelen sighed and went back to chopping wood. He felt weird, like something was wrong but he didn't know what. This feeling had been bothering him for weeks. As he swung the axe, a sudden gust of wind blew around him. Leaves and twigs flew in the air. Kaelen froze, his heart beating fast. He looked around, but no one else seemed to notice. The wind stopped as quickly as it started. "It's nothing," he told himself. "Just the wind." But Kaelen knew it wasn't just the wind. Strange things had been happening around him lately. Things moved when he got angry or upset. Sudden winds appeared out of nowhere. He tried to ignore it, but it was getting harder every day. As the sun started to set, Kaelen finished his work and walked back to the village. People were finishing their daily jobs. He waved to Mrs. Tanner who was hanging up her washing, and to old Mr. Burrows who was sitting on his porch. "Kaelen!" a happy voice called out. He turned and saw his best friend, Lira, running towards him. Her red hair was messy as usual, and she had a big smile on her freckled face. "Are you done with your chores? Want to go to the creek?" Kaelen wanted to say yes, but he remembered what happened last time they were at the creek. The water had suddenly risen and almost pulled Lira in. He knew it was because of him, even though he told Lira it was just a strange accident. "Sorry, Lira," he said, trying to smile. "I'm really tired. Maybe another time?" Lira looked sad for a moment, then shrugged. "Okay, but you owe me! I know you've been avoiding me lately." Kaelen felt bad for lying. "I'm not avoiding you," he said. "I've just been busy. You know how my dad is about chores." Lira rolled her eyes. "Yeah, yeah. Well, don't work too hard. See you tomorrow?" Kaelen nodded, watching as she ran off to join other friends. He wished he could be as happy as her, but his secret made him feel worried all the time. At home, Kaelen found his mom making dinner. The house smelled like fresh bread and stew. His little sister, Mira, was setting the table. "There you are," his mom said with a smile. "Go wash up. Dinner's almost ready." Dinner was quiet. His dad talked about work, his mom talked about village news, and Mira talked about school. Kaelen didn't eat much. He was thinking about other things. "Kaelen?" his mom asked. "Are you okay? You're not eating." He looked up and saw everyone looking at him. "I'm fine," he said quickly. "Just tired." His dad frowned. "You've been 'just tired' a lot lately. Is something wrong, son?" Kaelen thought about telling them everything. About the strange things happening, about how scared he was. But he couldn't say it. What if they thought he was crazy? Or what if they were scared of him? "It's nothing," he said. "I think I'll go to bed early." His parents looked worried but nodded. As Kaelen got up to leave, Mira pulled on his sleeve. "Will you tell me a story?" she asked with big eyes. Even though he felt bad, Kaelen couldn't help smiling. "Okay, squirt. One story, then bed." In Mira's room, Kaelen sat on her bed as she got under the covers. "What story do you want to hear?" "Tell me about the storm spirits again!" Mira said excitedly. Kaelen's smile dropped for a moment, but he nodded. "Okay. Long ago, when the world was new, powerful spirits ruled the sky. They could make wind blow, rain fall, and lightning flash just by thinking about it. But they were wild and changed their minds a lot, like the weather." As he talked, Kaelen felt a funny tingling in his fingers. He made fists, trying to ignore it. "People were scared of the storm spirits. They could destroy farms in a second, or blow houses away. But some people learned to talk to the spirits. They could calm them down and use their power to do good things." Mira's eyes were big and round. "Do you think the storm spirits are still out there?" Kaelen swallowed hard. "I don't know, Mira. Maybe." After saying goodnight to Mira, Kaelen went to his own small room. He lay on his bed, looking at the ceiling. He couldn't sleep. The tingling in his hands had spread, and he felt like energy was buzzing under his skin. Suddenly, a loud boom of thunder woke him up. He sat up fast, his heart pounding. Lightning lit up his room. The storm came out of nowhere. Wind howled outside, and rain hit the windows hard. Kaelen could hear his parents moving around, probably making sure everything was safe. He got up and looked out the window. The trees were bending in the strong wind. Leaves and small branches flew through the air. He watched as the wind tore a shutter off a neighbor's house. Then he heard a scream. Kaelen's blood felt cold when he realized it was Lira's voice. Without thinking, he grabbed his coat and ran out of the house. His mom called after him, but he didn't stop. The rain soaked him right away as he ran through the village. Lightning flashed overhead, followed by loud thunder. He saw a group of people gathered near the edge of the village and ran towards them. Lira's parents were there, with other villagers. They were all looking at something, their faces white with fear. Kaelen pushed through the crowd and felt his heart stop. A huge tree had fallen on Lira's house. Part of the house had collapsed. He could hear Lira crying inside. "We can't get to her!" Lira's dad was saying, his voice scared. "The tree's too heavy, and the rest of the house might fall down!" Kaelen stared at the scene, feeling terrified but also like he had to do something. He knew what he could do, but he was scared to show his secret to everyone. But when he heard Lira cry again, he made up his mind. Stepping forward, Kaelen raised his hands. He could feel the power inside him, no longer held back by his fear. The wind around him started to pick up, spinning leaves and stuff in a circle. "Kaelen, get back!" someone shouted, but he ignored them. Focusing hard on the fallen tree, Kaelen let the power flow through him. The wind did what he wanted, wrapping around the big tree trunk. Slowly, impossibly, the tree began to move. People gasped and cried out as the tree lifted into the air. Kaelen's whole body shook because it was so hard, but he didn't stop. With a final push, he threw the tree to the side, where it couldn't hurt anyone. As soon as the tree was gone, Lira's parents ran forward, calling her name. Kaelen felt very tired and wobbly. The storm around them started to calm down, the wind getting quieter and the rain slowing down. Lira came out of the broken house, helped by her parents. She was bruised but okay. She looked at Kaelen with big eyes, scared but also amazed. Kaelen looked around at all the villagers. They were all staring at him, looking shocked and scared and wondering what happened. His secret was out now, for better or worse. His parents pushed through the crowd. His mom looked very worried. "Kaelen," she said softly. "What... what was that?" Kaelen took a deep breath. He felt strangely calm now that everyone knew the truth. "I think," he said slowly, "that we need to talk." As the sun started to come up and the storm went away, Kaelen knew that his life in the village would never be the same. The storm had changed everything, both the one in the sky and the one that had been inside him for so long. Whatever happened next, he would face it bravely. No more hiding, no more being scared. The storm had woken up something inside him, and now he had to learn to control it, to understand it. As he walked back home with his family, Kaelen looked up at the clearing sky. For the first time in weeks, he felt a little bit of hope. The storm was over, but his big adventure was just starting.
