Chapter 9: The Awakening

Pain. It wasn’t the sharp, fleeting kind that came from wounds or broken bones. This was deeper, primal—like my soul was being unmade and rebuilt at the same time. Every nerve in my body burned as the weight of the fire still coiled inside me, a force beyond my understanding. I could still hear the voice. “You are the last.” The words were etched into my mind, into my bones, but their meaning was just out of reach. My heart pounded, my breath ragged as I tried to push myself up from the scorched earth. A boot stepped into my vision. The True Alpha crouched before me, his silver eyes unreadable, as if assessing whether I was worthy of the knowledge I had just glimpsed. “You felt it, didn’t you?” His voice was calm, controlled. But there was something else lurking beneath it—satisfaction. I swallowed hard, forcing my body to move. My arms trembled as I pushed myself onto my knees, the raw power still thrumming beneath my skin. It felt wrong, unnatural, but also… familiar. “Tell me what it means,” I rasped. The True Alpha tilted his head, watching me like a predator deciding if its prey was worth playing with. “You’ve spent your life believing you were nothing,” he murmured. “An omega. A discarded mate. A wolf without purpose.” His lips curled. “A mistake.” A growl built in my throat. “Don’t.” His voice was suddenly sharp, the command vibrating through me like a shockwave. “Do not bare your teeth at me when you don’t even know what you are yet.” Rage coiled inside me, but I clenched my jaw. “Then tell me.” Silence stretched between us. Then— “You are not just another wolf, Selene.” His gaze darkened, silver irises gleaming like molten metal. “You are the last Luna.” The words slammed into me like a strike to the chest. I sucked in a sharp breath. “What?” “You heard me,” he said, his tone almost lazy, but his expression betrayed the weight of what he was saying. “Your kind was wiped from existence long ago. Or so we thought.” I shook my head, my pulse roaring in my ears. “That’s not possible. I’m just—” “An omega?” he finished, amusement flickering in his eyes. “That’s what they made you believe. That’s what they forced you to become.” He leaned in, his voice dropping to a whisper. “But your blood tells a different story, doesn’t it?” I shuddered, my body still reeling from the fire’s power. My blood. I had always known I was different. My healing was stronger than most. My wolf, Alera, had always been restless, stronger than what an omega should be capable of. And now— Now, the fire had awakened something inside me. Something I didn’t understand. The True Alpha watched me, patient. And then, with terrifying certainty, he said— “They have been trying to erase you from the beginning.” The words stole the breath from my lungs. The pack. Killian. Cassia. All of them had played a part in pushing me into the shadows. And I had let them. I clenched my fists so hard my nails bit into my palms, drawing blood. No more. I lifted my chin, meeting the True Alpha’s gaze. “Then teach me.” Something dark flickered in his expression. “Careful what you ask for, little wolf,” he murmured. “The path of a Luna is not one of peace.” A smirk curled my lips, even as my heart pounded with fear. “Good,” I whispered. “Because I’m done bowing.” The wind howled around us, and I felt it—something shifting. Something being reborn. And for the first time in my life, I was ready.
