NATHAN
WE WILL FIND HER!
The moment Jessica vanished, my world collapsed into chaos. One second she was there, and the next, she was gone—disappeared into thin air, leaving nothing behind but the faint scent of her lingering in the air. My heart pounds with a mix of fury and despair, and Declan roars inside me, his grief mingling with mine, the loss almost unbearable.
"Jessica!" I bellow into the night, my voice raw and hoarse, but there’s no answer. No sign of her anywhere.
I feel it then—the powerlessness, the utter helplessness that claws at my chest, threatening to rip me apart from the inside out. I can't protect her if I don't know where she is. I can't keep her safe when she's vanished without a trace. And worst of all, I can't feel her. The bond that usually hums softly in the back of my mind is eerily silent, leaving me feeling more alone than I've ever felt in my life.
"Jessica!" I howl again, this time pouring every ounce of pain, frustration, and love into the call. The sound echoes off the trees and the walls of the estate, but still, there's no answer.
Declan’s need to shift and run, to search the entire world if need be, overwhelms me. My fingers twitch, claws beginning to extend, but a firm hand grabs my shoulder, pulling me back from the brink.
“Nathan,” Alex’s voice is steady, though I can hear the concern laced within it. “We need to head back home. There’s nothing more we can do here.”
“I’m not leaving without her!” I snarl, jerking away from his grasp, my eyes wild as I scan the surrounding area, desperate for any sign, any hint of where she might have gone.
Alex doesn’t flinch at my outburst. He meets my gaze with a calm, unwavering resolve. “We’ll find her. But right now, you’re no good to anyone like this. You need to get control, and we need to regroup. Home is where we’ll start.”
His words barely register through the red haze of rage and fear clouding my mind. But deep down, I know he’s right. Charging off blindly into the night won’t bring Jessica back. We need to be smart about this—methodical. Yet every second without her is like a dagger twisting in my chest, and the thought of going home without her feels like giving up.
But I’m not giving up. Not ever.
“I’ll tear the world apart to find her,” I growl, my voice low and dangerous.
“I know,” Alex replies, his tone gentle but firm. “And we’ll be right there with you. But first, we need to get you back, get our resources in order. We can’t help her if we’re scattered.”
I nod, though the motion feels robotic, disconnected from the tempest of emotions churning inside me. My decision is made in an instant—there’s no way I’m sitting in a car, caged in by metal and glass, while my mate is out there somewhere, possibly in danger.
Without another word, I let Declan take over, the shift coming faster than ever, my clothes ripping apart as my body contorts and expands into the massive form of my wolf. The cool night air hits my fur, and I throw back my head, howling up at the moon, a cry filled with loss and fury, a promise to the night that I will find her, no matter what it takes.
Declan’s powerful legs propel us forward, and we leap from the balcony, landing on the soft earth below with a muffled thud. The moment our paws hit the ground, we’re off, running faster than the wind, the landscape blurring around us. We don’t need a road; we don’t need directions. All we need is the freedom to run, to let the primal instincts take over, to feel the earth beneath us as we pour all of our grief and rage into the relentless pounding of our paws.
Behind me, I can sense Alex and the others, keeping pace, but giving me the space I need. They understand this fury, this need to do something—anything—to avoid the suffocating helplessness that comes with not knowing where Jessica is.
The forest looms ahead, dark and foreboding, but I don’t hesitate. I plunge into it, the trees whipping past us as we weave through the underbrush. Declan pushes harder, faster, each stride an outlet for the anger we can’t contain, the fear we can’t ignore.
We will find her, Declan growls in my mind, a vow etched in every fiber of our being.
We will, I agree, my heart aching with the intensity of it.
The night stretches on as we run, the moon our only witness. The world becomes a blur of shadows and scents, but I don’t stop. I can’t. Not until I find her. Not until I bring Jessica back to where she belongs—in my arms, safe, where no one can ever take her from me again.
