NATHAN
INSIDE THE KING'S PACK
The sounds of struggling reach us as soon as we step out of the pack’s boundary. Saul’s in trouble—two rogues have him cornered, their fangs bared, and although he’s holding his own, it’s clear he won’t last much longer.
“Let’s go,” I mutter to Alex, and we sweep in, tearing the rogues off him in seconds. It’s quick work. Their snarls turn into yelps as we overwhelm them, and within moments, they’re on the ground, defeated.
“Thanks,” Saul gasps, his breath coming in ragged bursts, fear still sharp in his eyes.
I grab his collar, yanking him closer. “Don’t thank me yet. You’re coming with me.” I shove him back, eyes narrowed. “Lead the way.”
Saul stumbles, blinking in confusion. “Lead the way to...?”
“The Silvercrest Pack,” I growl.
His face drains of color, and he glances away, clutching his side. “I can’t go back there. They’ll kill me.”
“I’ll kill you if you don’t,” I snarl, stepping closer. “Now move.”
He swallows hard, his eyes darting between Alex and me, but finally, he starts walking. His shoulders are slumped, defeated, and I can practically smell the fear coming off him.
“Did you see my father?” Saul suddenly asks, stopping in his tracks.
Alex and I exchange a glance. This isn’t the time for a heart-to-heart.
“I know he’s dead,” Saul whispers, staring at the ground. “He linked me... told me to run.”
“Yeah. We saw him,” Alex snaps. “Right before the rogue king slit his throat.”
Saul winces, as if the words hit him like a physical blow. “Did he... did he defend himself?” His voice cracks, barely above a whisper.
Frustration surges through me. We don’t have time for this. “What difference does it make?” I growl, stepping forward. “He’s dead, Saul. Now move before we end up the same way.”
But Saul stands firm, blinking rapidly as he fights back tears. “I need to know,” he whispers. “Did he die fighting, or did they—”
A sharp crack echoes through the air, and Saul topples forward, unconscious before he hits the ground.
Before me is Alex standing there, stone in hand, a smirk tugging at his lips. “He was wasting time.”
I sigh, running a hand through my hair. “You could’ve warned me before you knocked him out.”
“Where’s the fun in that?” Alex shrugs, tossing the stone aside. “I’ll shift and carry him.”
We move quickly. I help strap Saul’s limp body onto Cyrus, Alex’s wolf, before shifting into Declan, my wolf, and we set off into the night. The moon hangs low in the sky, casting eerie shadows through the trees as we run, the cool air rushing past us.
We’ve been moving for miles when I feel it—something strange in the air. The ground beneath my paws hums with energy, vibrations I can’t quite place. Up ahead, the air seems to shimmer, faint but undeniable.
I shift and stare at open air.
Cyrus shifts back into Alex. “What’s up?” he asks, noticing me staring at the strange shimmer.
“You don’t see that?” I ask, frowning as I step closer to the faint glow.
Alex glances around, confused. “See what?”
“There’s something here...” I extend my hand toward the shimmering air, and the second my fingers touch it, a jolt of electricity shoots up my arm. I yank my hand back, startled, watching as the shimmering closes up, like water smoothing over after a stone’s been thrown.
Alex’s eyes widen. “Okay, I saw that. What the hell was that?”
“I don’t know,” I mutter, stepping forward again. I push my hand through the shimmer, feeling the energy pulse against my skin. It’s not painful, more like a warm, buzzing sensation that spreads through me the further I reach.
The shimmer ripples, widening, until it opens into a portal.
On the other side is a road, lined with tall trees that stretch toward the horizon. The moon sits low, casting its silver rays over the landscape, and there’s a warmth in the air that feels... inviting. Safe, even.
“Woah...” Alex breathes, stepping up beside me. “Where the hell does that lead?”
I shake my head, still mesmerized by the beauty of the scene before us. “I don’t know. But we don’t have time to figure it out.” I pull my hand back, and the shimmer slowly starts to close again.
“We should go in,” Alex says.
I hesitate, glancing down at Saul’s unconscious form, then back to the portal. “Yeah. We don’t have a choice.”
Together, we carry Saul through the portal. As soon as we step in, the air shifts, turning crispier.
The sounds of night creatures moving, the quiet hum of life filling the atmosphere. My skin tingles with the same vibrations I felt earlier, but here, they’re stronger. It’s like the place itself is alive, watching us.
“Let’s keep moving,” I say, glancing at Alex. “We need to find the main pack. And fast.”
Alex shifts back into Cyrus, and I help him secure Saul once more. Declan growls low in my chest, on high alert as we set off down the road. Every snap of a twig, every rustle of leaves puts us on edge.
We’re entering someone the Alpha King’s territory—someone powerful—and we have no invitation.
If they catch us, they’ll rip us apart before we even get a chance to explain why we are here.
My heart pounds in my chest as I run, my thoughts drifting to Jessica. She’s the reason I’m doing all this. I need to get to her. Need her to hear the truth—that I never betrayed her. Even without the evidence I need.
But first, we have to survive.
