CHAPTER 99

1300 Words
NATHAN WE MEET AGAIN Someone shouting my name jerks me awake. My vision swims as I try to focus, head pounding. I blink hard, fighting off the remnants of drug-induced sleep. I’m sitting on a hard chair, wrists bound to its arms. The sharp, metallic tang of silver bites into my skin. “You good?” Alex’s voice pulls my attention. He’s seated to my left, also tied to a chair, eyes still groggy but sharp with determination. “I’m fine,” I mutter, my voice hoarse. My muscles scream in protest as I shift in the chair. “Where are we?” “No idea,” Alex grunts. “Woke up like this. We’ve got company though.” He jerks his head towards the door. I follow his gaze and catch a glimpse of shadows shifting under the crack of the door—guards. Behind me, my fingers curl into fists, frustration burning low in my gut. Declan is still silent. Out cold. “They mixed the wolfsbane with something else,” I say, glancing around the room. It’s dingy, with cracked, peeling walls and broken windows. The air smells of mildew and dust. “Can you feel your Cyrus?” Alex shakes his head. “He’s out cold. You?” “Declan’s still snoring in the back of my head. I’ve never heard him this quiet.” A headache begins to pulse at my temples. “We need to move. Fast. We have to warn the king—" I squirm, trying to feel my pockets. Panic claws at me when I realize they’re empty. “s**t. The phone. It’s gone.” Alex swallows hard. “Fell out, or they took it?” I pray it fell out. If they have the phone—the evidence—I don’t know what they will do with it. Before I can say anything more, the door creaks open. Heavy footsteps echo against the wooden floor. Two hybrid wolves step in, their twisted, hulking forms oozing menace. Their snarls rumble in the air, sharp and low. And then, their leader steps in, a hybrid I’ve come to hate. He’s wearing a white t-shirt, blue jeans, and a grin that makes my skin crawl. “Ah, finally awake, I see,” he squeals loudly as he rubs his palms together, looking from Alex to me. His eyes glowing as if he just hit gold. “Sorry about the mix. You guys were too strong for my wolves. Hope you don’t mind?” “Let us go this instant!” I grit out. He flashes me a smile. “Not yet. There’s someone that has been dying to meet you, Alpha.” Alex and I share a look and I wonder who could that be. “Don’t worry your little head over it. He was captured too while you two were asleep for three days.” “Son of a b@!%h!” I growl at him, but he giggles like a teenage girl. Three days in this place? “Yeah, that’s who I am. Now, if you’re ready to meet your visitor,” he snaps his fingers and the door opens. He moves aside. My nose rises both in fury and disgust as my eyes meet the man I have been chasing. Kizziah. “We meet again, Alpha Hunt,” he sneers, his voice dripping with usual contempt. He looks leaner, older, but no less dangerous. “What are you doing here?” “Looking for help against you.” “Not even the hybrids can save you from me this time. Just pray I don’t get out of these cuffs,” threatening him and meaning every word. “We shall see about that,” says Kizziah. “Let’s see if you will have a pack to return to or even if you will leave this place…alive.” “Once I do, I am coming for you and your son,” The hybrid leader raises his hands up. “Okay, you two can do catch up later. Tell me why he is important to me,” he asks Kizziah in an irritated voice. “First, you have to let my son and me leave your pack. That was the agreement,” Kizziah retorts. “I will like I promised you, Now, tell me,” the hybrid demands. “Not until we are out of your lands,” Kizziah replies. “Once we are far from you, I will tell you who he is and how important he is to the king.” My eyes widen in alarm at what he just said. “What the hell are you doing?!” “Buying my freedom from this place and securing the future of my son and pack.” Kizziah is a fool if he thinks a rogue hybrid would keep to his promise. “My word is enough,” the hybrid wolf presses on, already looking flustered and impatient. “Not for me,” Kizziah pushes back. “Fine, we can do a blood oath,” suggests the hybrid leader. Alex and I burst out laughing. “What’s so funny? A blood oath is sacred and whoever breaks it will face dire consequences,” says the leader of the hybrids. That holds true for normal wolves like us. But for them, I highly doubt that. I can see the fear creeping into Kizziah’s eyes. “Fine,” Kizziah agrees, making me shake my head in pity at him. “But we will do it at the edge of the…” His sentence is cut short by the entrance of a lady with sharp grey and calculating eyes. Dressed in all black. Her black hair is tied back in a ponytail, revealing a smooth face with sharp features. Something about her is familiar. “What’s going on here?” her eyes dart sharply around the room, narrowing in shock and surprise when she sees Kizziah. “What are you doing here?” she shrieks at him at an equally shocked Kizziah. “He’s my guest, my love,” the hybrid leader says. “Come.” “What?!” Kizziah yells. “You know each other?!” confusion clouding his face. She hisses at him. “It’s none of your business. I thought you would be away from here by now,” I can sense also the worry rolling off this woman. Her eyes flicker with a myriad of emotions at the same time. “I arrested them for trespassing…” the leader starts but she cuts him off. “You have to let them go!” “Why?” hybrid man demands in a tight tone. “I am the alpha and this is my territory.” She approaches him, leveling her eyes with his. “If the king finds him, the truth will come out,” she says in a strong voice. “The mental block in his head, will soon slip off. Malachai will come after me.” The leader charges forward, grabbing her head firmly in his palms. “No one will come after you! I will kill him before he dares lay a finger on you!” Malachai? Did she mean Alpha King Malachai? This woman must be from his pack. What did she mean about the block in Kizziah’s head? Who is she? And why is she with a hybrid rogue? The same rogues her pack helped to destroy. How does she know Kizziah? As my head swims with these questions, I know it will definitely lead to my mate. I have to leave this place to warn her. Even without the evidence with me, I know once I mention the rogue to the king, I will be granted an audience. And will take it from there with my mate.
