CHAPTER 64

1165 Words
NATHAN FAMILY OR TITLE “What do you have for me?” I ask Tyler over the phone. He’s at the Council, searching for the name and details of the mysterious pack Elder De Santos told me about. “They are as mysterious as he said they are. Even their name and the location of their pack is covered in ink. No one knows anything about them,” Tyler reports. “Then how did the elder know about them?” I wonder aloud. How did De Santos know about them? Is he the only one who does? “I don’t know, man. My contacts here were reluctant to dig. I had to bribe them with more cash than expected. This pack is strange. Also, Kizziah and his son have been absent from their pack for some days now.” “Any news on where they went?” “No one knows. They left days after they came from the Council.” “Alright. Thanks for the help. You can come back home now.” “About that…” “What?” “May I take two days off?” I frown at his request. It’s unlike Tyler to ask for days off. Alex, maybe, but Tyler, no. “Why? Did you encounter some problems?” I worry that someone caught him snooping around. The Council is known for its secrecy. His playful laugh reassures me. “Nothing happened, Nate.” “Then what is it?” “I think I may have found my mate.” My brows rise in both relief and surprise. “Congrats, man.” “Thanks.” “Bring her home with you in two days' time.” “I’ll try my best to convince her. I’ll let you know if I find more.” “Sure. Take care.” I relax back into the couch with a smile playing over my lips. Tyler has finally found his mate. I’m happy for him. Alex, Tyler, and I grew up together, always found around each other. Not surprising, as our fathers were close friends too, each holding the three highest positions in the pack. Alex’s father was the beta, and Tyler’s the Gamma. Tyler’s ancestors were also among the first pack members to join the first alpha of our pack. Now, only Alex remains to find his mate. We are in our late 20s and need to settle down and start having pups to leave the pack to. Speaking of mates, mine is still with my mother and Cara, the two biggest lovely bullies in my life. Of course, I love them and know they mean the best for me by helping out with Jessica. But, I just wanted to enjoy shopping with her. I can choose a befiting dress for her. “You know nothing about fashion,” Declan sneers in my head. “Shut up,” I snarl at his intrusion. “I dress well in case you haven’t noticed.” “Plah!” he scoffs. “They will pick the best dress, I am sure. Mother has excellent fashion sense, as does Cara.” “Go back to sleep, will you, and let me enjoy my peace.” “I’ll be back when she’s back.” “Not happening,” I say as my phone starts to vibrate, frowning when I see the caller’s name. “Now shut up and let me answer my phone.” He snarls before retreating. “Hello, Elder De Santos,” I answer, wondering why he is calling. “Alpha Hunt.” We exchange pleasantries, then he gets down to business. “Will you be attending the Ball this time around?” Attending the Ball has never been my favorite thing. It’s just a place for women to gawk at me while plotting to get me to bed them with hopes of being my mate and Luna. “I will,” I reply. Why not? I have my Luna and mate now. Even if she’s not fully mine yet, I will flaunt her for all to see and keep the women at bay. “I am coming with my mate.” The relief in his voice surprises me. “I’m glad you decided to. It’s a good decision.” I sense there’s more to why he feels it’s a good decision. “Why do you think so?” He takes a deep breath. “Do you remember what we discussed the last time? About your mate?” “Yes, I do.” “I intend to speak with the alpha of that pack. To invite him to the Ball with his mate. If you’re there with her, maybe I can introduce you to them and see if they recognize her or see any similarities.” My heart pounds loudly in my chest, anxiety mixing with hope. This could be it. These people could be her people. “Are you still there, Alpha Nathan?” De Santos’ voice brings me back. “I am. Do you think he will come?” My hope crashes through my words. “I hope so. I will try my best to convince him. Just make sure you are there.” “I will be there,” I promise, my voice thunderous with determination. “We will be there.” “Good to hear. Also, thanks for the favor.” “You’re welcome.” I wonder if I should ask him more about this mysterious pack. Won’t I expose Tyler to them? As much as I trust De Santos, he is still an Elder of the Council. “Ask him. He owes us a favor,” Declan tells me. He’s right. I just did his pack a huge favor by helping their members visit my pack in hopes of finding their mates. “I will see you at…” “May I ask a question?” I interrupt him, praying he doesn’t get suspicious. “Go ahead, Alpha.” “What is the name of this pack? And why do they stay away from the rest of the packs?” Seconds of hesitation make me bite my teeth in regret. Did I just mess things up? De Santos’ voice shows no suspicion. “It’s a long story, Alpha. Tragic too. An alpha had to choose between his family and title. Even if I tell you the name of the pack, you won’t know them.” A heavy sigh follows his next words. “Just make sure you come with your mate. Thank you for your time, Alpha.” His words throw me into deep thought. What could have happened to make an alpha choose between his family and title? Aren’t those two tied together? How can one be without the other? The sound of giggles and voices coming from inside gets my attention. The three most important women in my life enter, chatting and laughing. Will I ever be in a position to choose between my title and my family?
