Chapter 2: The Discovery 3

"There's a legend," Luna replied, her eyes meeting his. "It speaks of true love's kiss having the power to break the enchantment. But it's just a story, something to give us hope. No one in my family has ever found such love... especially not with a human." Ethan reached out, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "Maybe legends exist for a reason," he said softly. Luna's breath hitched as his fingers grazed her cheek. For a moment, they stood frozen, the space between them charged with unspoken feelings. Then, reality intruded as distant voices echoed through the woods. "We have to go," Luna whispered urgently. "Someone might have followed us." Ethan nodded, though part of him wanted to stay, to unravel this mystery further. But he sensed her fear, understood the danger they might be in if discovered. Together, they slipped back through the forest, the blood moon casting long shadows behind them. As they emerged onto the outskirts of town, Ethan glanced back at the treeline, where the crimson light still lingered. This was just the beginning, he realized. Their lives would never be the same. The next day at school, tensions were palpable. Victoria had somehow learned of Ethan's secret encounter with Luna and was using it to fuel her cruelty. During lunch, she cornered Luna in the crowded cafeteria, her voice loud enough for everyone to hear. "So, Luna," Victoria purred, her bleach-blonde hair swinging as she leaned in. "I heard you've been keeping some interesting company lately. Is it true you've been meeting someone in the woods?" Luna's silver eyes narrowed, her jaw set in determination. "I don't know what you're talking about," she replied coolly, though her knuckles whitened around her tray. "Oh, come on," Victoria laughed, a sharp, unpleasant sound. "We all know about your little midnight stroll with Ethan. Some people say they saw two figures heading into the forest together. How romantic." Ethan, who had been lingering nearby, stepped forward. "Leave her alone, Victoria," he said firmly. "You've already done enough damage." Victoria turned to him, her eyes glinting with malice. "Or what? You'll tell on me? Who would believe the word of a loner like you against the most popular girl in school?" Before Ethan could respond, Luna surprised everyone by speaking up. "Enough," she declared, her voice steady and clear. "I'm tired of your games, Victoria. Whatever you've heard is a lie. Ethan and I are just friends." The cafeteria fell silent, students exchanging stunned glances. Victoria's carefully constructed scheme was unraveling before her eyes. She recovered quickly, however, her smile turning venomous. "Friends, huh?" she sneered. "Tell that to the people who saw you two under the blood moon. They say it looked pretty intimate from where they were standing." A murmur rippled through the crowd. Luna's face paled, but she held her ground. Ethan placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder, his green eyes locking with hers in silent support. "Let them think what they want," he said quietly. "We know the truth." Victoria's smirk faltered as she realized she wasn't getting the reaction she'd hoped for. With a huff, she turned and strode away, her followers trailing behind like lost puppies. The incident had ignited a firestorm of rumors throughout the school. By afternoon, stories had spread about Luna's supposed relationship with Ethan, some claiming they'd been seen kissing, others insisting they were involved in something far more sinister. The blood moon had become a central element in these tales, with students whispering about occult rituals and forbidden love. Ethan found himself caught in the crossfire, alternately defending Luna and trying to downplay their relationship. He didn't mind the attention—after all, it was Victoria who had started the rumors—but he was concerned about how it affected Luna. That evening, he texted her: *Meet me at the old oak tree? We need to talk.* Luna replied almost immediately: *I'll be there in 10.* When he arrived at the designated spot—a massive oak tree on the edge of the school grounds that had been a favorite hangout during warmer months—he found Luna already waiting. She was sitting against the trunk, her legs drawn up to her chest, staring at the horizon where the last traces of sunset lingered. "Victoria's really done a number on us," Ethan remarked, sitting beside her but not too close. Luna nodded. "I can't believe she'd go this far. But I should have expected it. She thrives on drama." "She's just jealous," Ethan said suddenly. "Jealous that you've got something she can't touch." Luna turned to look at him, surprise evident in her silver eyes. "What makes you say that?" "Think about it," Ethan continued. "All her power comes from making others feel small. But with you, it's not working. You're not breaking. You're not giving her the reaction she wants. It's frustrating her." A small smile played on Luna's lips. "Maybe you're right. But that doesn't make her any less dangerous." They sat in companionable silence for a moment, the tension from the day gradually easing. Ethan glanced at Luna from the corner of his eye, taking in the way the fading light caught the silver strands in her hair, the determined set of her jaw. "I meant what I said earlier," he said softly. "About us being friends. And if that's all you want, that's fine. But I want you to know... I'm here for you, whatever you need." Luna's eyes met his, and for a heartbeat, neither spoke. Then, slowly, she reached out and took his hand in hers. Her touch was warm, reassuring. "Thank you," she whispered. "That means more to me than you know." As the first stars began to twinkle in the deepening indigo sky, Ethan knew that whatever challenges lay ahead, they would face them together. The blood moon had revealed Luna's secret, but it had also illuminated a bond between them that neither could deny—a connection forged in shared vulnerability and mutual respect. And deep within the forest, watching from the shadows, a pair of amber eyes observed their interaction with interest.
