CHAPTER 11: A QUESTION OF TRUST

257 Words
GABRIEL’s WARNING Ava’s heels clicked against the marble floor as she stepped into the resort’s lounge. Rhys was already seated at a private table, his posture as calm and unreadable as ever. Across from him sat a man she didn’t recognize. Tall. Well-dressed. A smirk playing at his lips. The man turned, eyes sweeping over her with far too much interest. “Ah. The wife.” Ava lifted her chin. “And you are?” The man smiled. “Gabriel Walton. An old friend of your husband.” She didn’t miss the way Rhys jaw tensed slightly. Gabriel’s eyes flickered to her wedding ring. “I didn’t think marriage was your style, Rhys.” “Maybe.” he said. “Be careful, Mrs. De Montaigne. Not everything is as it seems.” Ava’s stomach twisted. Before she could ask what he meant, Rhys stood abruptly, his grip firm around her wrist. “We’re leaving.” As soon as they were alone in their hotel suite, Rhys turned to her. “Stay away from him.” Ava folded her arms. “Why? Because he might actually tell me something?” Rhys stepped closer, his presence overpowering. “Because he’s dangerous.” His voice was sharp, commanding. Ava refused to back down. “And you’re not?” Rhys eyes darkened. For a second, the air between them felt electric, charged. Then, without another word, he turned and walked away. Ava exhaled, her pulse racing. Gabriel’s words echoed in her mind— “Not everything is as it seems.”
