Chapter Seven: Cracks in the Mask Cassandra The last night of the Christmas holiday settled over the beachfront like a velvet curtain, dark, warm, uneasy. The sea murmured against the shore, lights from the resort casting long reflections over the water. Music floated from a distant bar, laughter threading through the cool breeze. Cassandra held her wrap tightly around her shoulders as she walked along the boardwalk, Jay asleep back at the villa with one of Bosco’s guards. She needed air, space from Maxwell’s intense glances, Julie’s poisonous glares, Jason’s unwanted questions, and Lyra’s constant hovering. She needed her mind back. But the universe, as usual, had other plans. “Cassandra.” Jason’s voice slipped through the night like a whisper she’d spent years trying to forget.
