Man's Claim

Chapter Twenty-Five: Man’s Claim Rain fell in silver sheets over the ruined tower. Sirens screamed below. Searchlights cut through smoke and shattered glass, fixing on the terrace where they stood like prey trapped in a hunter’s scope. Armored vehicles blocked every street. Black-clad operatives poured from them in disciplined formation, silver insignias gleaming on their chests: "International Supernatural Tribunal". The highest enforcement body left standing after the Council’s collapse. And they had come for her. ***** Cassandra Jay trembled in her arms. She kissed his forehead. “It’s okay.” He looked at the soldiers below and frowned. “That’s a lot of bad people.” Despite everything, she almost smiled. “Maybe. Maybe not.” But Cassandra felt their intentions before they even spoke. Fear. Greed. Calculation. And beneath it, awe. They weren’t here to help. They were here to control what they did not understand. ***** The Voice of the Tribunal A woman stepped from the lead vehicle. Tall, silver-haired, immaculate black coat untouched by rain. Her presence silenced even the wolves. She raised a hand. “Cassandra Wells,” she called. “I am High Adjudicator Seraphine Vale of the Tribunal.” Her eyes lifted coolly. “You are classified as an unregulated world-level supernatural anomaly.” Lucien muttered, “Charming title.” Seraphine continued. “You will surrender peacefully for containment, study, and protective oversight.” Cassandra stared. “Containment?” “Correct.” “Study?” “Correct.” Jason growled. Bosco chambered a round. Maxwell’s expression turned glacial. ***** Jason He stepped forward first. “No.” Seraphine’s gaze shifted to him. “Alpha Jason Bon. Your family has pending sanctions. This is not your jurisdiction.” “She’s not your prisoner.” “She is a destabilization risk.” Jason’s wolf surged beneath his skin. “She’s a mother.” For the first time, Seraphine blinked. Then dismissed him. “How sentimental.” Jason wanted to tear the street apart. ***** Maxwell Maxwell moved beside Cassandra calmly. “If you wanted cooperation, you should have brought doctors, not rifles.” Seraphine replied instantly. “If I wanted advice, I’d have summoned a provincial surgeon.” Lucien actually laughed. Maxwell did not. “I’m going to enjoy proving you fragile,” he said softly. ***** Lucien He stepped into the light with aristocratic ease. “Adjudicator Vale. Prince Lucien Varik.” Recognition flickered in her eyes. “Your territories are not recognized.” “Yet here I am.” “You will stand down.” Lucien smiled lazily. “I rarely do anything so vulgar.” Then he looked at Cassandra. “Say the word and I’ll burn their convoy.” She arched a brow. “You flirt like a natural disaster.” “It has worked before.” ***** Bosco Bosco crouched near Cassandra and Jay. “There’s a service elevator shaft on the east side,” he murmured. “We can move.” Cassandra shook her head. “If we run now, they chase forever.” “Then we kill them now.” “No.” Bosco looked up sharply. She met his gaze. “No more blood for me.” Something old and painful moved behind his eyes. He nodded once. ***** Lyra and Julie Lyra sat wrapped in a blanket near paramedics, hollow-eyed and silent. Julie beside her looked delighted by the spectacle. “This is better than television,” Julie whispered. Lyra didn’t respond. Julie nudged her. “You kidnapped a child and still aren’t the worst person here.” Still nothing. For the first time, Lyra looked broken enough not to care. ***** The Claims Begin Seraphine raised a document tablet. “By authority vested in the Tribunal, Cassandra Wells is hereby placed under emergency custody.” “No,” Jason said. “No,” Maxwell echoed. “No,” Lucien added pleasantly. Seraphine’s jaw tightened. “And on what legal basis do you object?” Jason answered first. “She is under pack protection.” Maxwell immediately countered. “She is under hospital medical protection.” Lucien placed a hand over his heart. “She is under royal courtship protection.” Bosco spoke last. “She is under my roof, which means anyone touching her loses fingers.” Even Seraphine looked tired now. ***** Cassandra They were all speaking about her. Again. Like men in different suits repeating the same ancient mistake. She handed Jay gently to Bosco. “Hold him.” Then she stepped forward alone. Rain drenched her hair and clothes. The floodlights brightened instinctively. Seraphine studied her carefully. “Miss Wells...” “Stop.” The single word carried strange force. Every weapon light flickered. Every radio hissed. The city itself seemed to listen. Cassandra descended the broken steps slowly until she stood at the edge of the terrace above the Tribunal forces. “You came to contain me,” she said. Seraphine held steady. “To protect global stability.” “You mean control what scares you.” “We mean prevent catastrophe.” Cassandra’s voice sharpened. “I already prevented catastrophe.” Silence. No one challenged that. ***** No Man’s Claim She turned then, not to Seraphine, but to the men behind her. Jason. Maxwell. Lucien. Bosco. “All of you.” They straightened unconsciously. “I am grateful,” she said. “For loyalty. For love. For help.” Her eyes hardened. “But hear me clearly.” Rain intensified. “I am not under pack protection.” Jason swallowed. “Not under hospital protection.” Maxwell’s jaw flexed. “Not under royal protection.” Lucien’s smile faded into something more respectful. “Not under anyone’s roof.” Bosco exhaled slowly. Then Cassandra faced the world below. “I am under my own protection.” Power rippled outward. Every spotlight burst. Darkness swallowed the street. Gasps rose from below. Then softer lights returned one by one, from storefronts, cars, windows. But now they all glowed warm gold. Responding to her. ***** Seraphine Changes Tactics Interesting, Cassandra felt suddenly. Fear had shifted to strategy. Seraphine lowered her voice. “You have a child.” “Yes.” “Then think like a mother. Come willingly, and he grows in safety.” Jason snarled. Lucien’s eyes flashed murderous amber. Maxwell stepped forward, but Cassandra raised a hand. She wanted to hear this. Seraphine continued. “Refuse, and every government, pack, and faction on earth hunts you.” A pause. “Your son included.” Bosco drew his gun instantly. Jason caught his arm barely in time. “Not yet.” ***** The Choice Interrupted Cassandra’s anger rose, cold, immense. But before she could answer, Jay wriggled free from Bosco and toddled to the edge of the terrace. Every armed operative panicked. “Child approaching!” Jay cupped his hands around his mouth and shouted down: “LEAVE MY MOMMY ALONE!” The entire street froze. Even Seraphine. Jay then pointed at the armored convoy. “And your cars are ugly!” Lucien bent over laughing. Julie screamed with joy somewhere behind them. Even Maxwell’s mouth twitched. Jason looked unbearably proud. ***** Unexpected Direction During the distraction, a young Tribunal analyst ran to Seraphine with a tablet, whispering urgently. Her expression changed. For the first time, there was genuine surprise. She looked up at Cassandra differently now. Not as threat. As revelation. “What is it?” Jason demanded. Seraphine ignored him. Her voice when she spoke was quieter. “Your birth records were sealed under Omega Black protocol.” Bosco went still. Cassandra frowned. “What does that mean?” Seraphine stared directly at her. “It means the Tribunal knew you existed before you were born.” Shock ripped through the terrace. Bosco’s cigarette dropped from his fingers. Jason’s blood ran cold. Maxwell’s eyes narrowed. Lucien whispered, “Now we begin.” ***** Seraphine slowly removed one glove. On the inside of her wrist was a symbol. The same symbol engraved on Cassandra’s necklace. Bosco staggered backward. “No…” Cassandra’s breath caught. “Where did you get that?” Seraphine’s eyes softened for the first time. “From the woman who begged me to hide you.” A beat. “Your mother.” Thunder cracked across the city. Bosco looked like a man shot through the heart. And somewhere behind the convoy, a hooded female figure stepped from the shadows. Watching Cassandra. Waiting.
